Q&A: Daniel Barnett (Team Bottrill/HSS Hire Elite)

1. How did you get into cycle racing?
Daniel: Looking for something to replace boxing and gym to keep me fit as I was getting too old to get hit!

2. Is time trialling your main discipline or are there others?
Daniel: TT is my main discipline but I’m having a bit of a change of focus to some multisport events this year after 10 years of TT/bike

3. What is the best thing about racing a time trial?
Daniel: The finish… then explaining at the results board how you rode like a total legend or reeling off the reasons/total facts as to why you haven’t gone as fast as you’d hoped!

4. What was the highlight of 2016 for you and why?
Daniel: A 30mph ride and team competition record in the Shaftsbury 50. Its certainly not my distance. We’d altered my training for it, tried it once at the BDCA 50 where I crashed but stuck with it and tried again and absolutely nailed it.

5. What was your favourite (most enjoyable) race of 2016
Daniel: Probably my 18:26 10 mile pb in the SSLL charity event, my last fast 10 of the season and last chance at a 10pb for the year to keep my unbroken run of a 10pb every year for 10 years. Without doubt a super fast day but I cant think of anywhere I could’ve paced it better or found any more time.

6. What was the toughest race of 2016 for you and why?
Daniel: Probably the Shaftsbury 50. It was 34 degrees and the last 6 miles trying to hang onto that 30 average were the most I’ve ever suffered on a bike. I was just ruined!

7. If there was one thing you learned in 2016 to help you go faster what was that?
Daniel: That I need to be younger and lighter!

8. What is the best piece of equipment to do with racing you are proud of most?
Daniel: Probably my Giant Trinity, it’s an amazing bike for sure but its more that, I never thought I’d be good enough for someone to give me a bike to ride. Now all my pb’s are on that bike.

9. What is your warm up routine for races – rollers or turbo? Music or no music?
Daniel: I tend to warm up on the road to get away from the distractions of the HQ.

10. What is the hardest drill that you have in training that you dred
Daniel: I genuinely don’t really dread any of them anymore. I just look at the session and get it done. It will either go well or it wont. Either way I’ll have tried.

11. What are the goals for 2017?
Daniel: I’d like to win the age group in the Midland Sprint Tri series, ride some new races and events. Do the national TTT.

12. What will be the first race of 2017?
Daniel: I’m doing the Sheffrec 2up 25 tt with the mate I started riding with who’s just joined the team this year.
