News: Welsh RR Champs in Conwy
Welsh Cycling has announced that the 2017 Welsh Cycling Road Race Championships will be held at Llyn Brenig, Conwy on Sunday 20 August promoted by VC Melyd.
Dale Appleby wins the 2016 Welsh RR Championships
The Championship event will take riders into the heart of North Wales, with the course based at Llyn Brenig, Conwy. The race will take place over a 20.5 mile circuit packed with challenging climbs, and thrilling descents. Winding roads will take riders through wooded areas of Cerrigydrudion, and open highways with spectacular views of Snowdonia National Park culminating in a finish on a scenic 300m incline north of Llyn Brenig.
Simon Parkinson, event organiser for VC Melyd said: “Myself and the club are really excited to host the event and look forward to see Wales’s best riders race on a fantastic course around Llyn Brenig. We hope to see you in Conwy in August!”

The Senior and Junior Men’s race will cover 63 miles, the laps of the circuit. The Women’s/Veterans/Cat 4 race will cover 42 miles over 2 laps. VC Melyd held the North Wales Road Race Series in 2016, which has boosted the domestic road racing calendar in the region. The North Wales KOM Series returns in 2017, with an opportunity to preview the Welsh Championship course Sunday 7 May ahead of the event in August.
Anne Adams-King, Welsh Cycling’s chief executive officer, said: “We are thrilled that VC Melyd are hosting the Welsh Road Race Championship this summer, a highlight of the competition calendar in Wales.
The course borders Snowdonia National Park, offering breath-taking views of the Welsh landscape, and a challenging course for riders. I look forward to welcoming clubs from across the country to Llyn Brenig to support the Championships.”
With more than 170 clubs and 6000 members in Wales, the Welsh Cycling Road Race Championships offer a great opportunity for the cycling community to come together and support the event.
The Welsh Road Race Championships is a closed event, where competitors must be eligible to compete for Wales by fulfilling the following criteria:
— Born in Wales
— Parent born in Wales
— Lived in Wales for five years consecutively prior to the date of the event
Entries will be live in March 2017.
