News: Racing on the road

TLI Cycling is continuing to support the campaign to secure the future of road racing. In England, event organisers still have to comply with the Cycle Racing on the Highway Regulations, 1960.

However in Wales, the Cycle Racing on Highways (Amendment) (Wales) Regulations 2015 provide an update to the previous regulations, bringing them in line with current road conditions and enabling a modern approach to safety, for both the public and event competitors.

These changes were the result of a Government consultation in 2013 to which TLI Cycling extensively contributed. The proposed amended legislation was subsequently enacted in Wales, but for some reason the proposals have not yet been ratified in England.

Importantly the proposed changes would relax the rule on the length of a race circuit, which would allow greater flexibility in choice of location. It would also help to lessen any occasional inconvenience to other road users.

TLI Cycling considers it strange that these proposed changes have not been ratified for use in legitimate road races in England, particularly when mass participation events such as sportives, with many thousands of competitors, are not covered by any legislation.
