Result: Cardiff Ajax CC 10
A pleasant sunny but windy afternoon greeted the riders at Cardiff Ajax CC’s 10 mile time trial on Saturday 25th March on the Abercarn-Risca course. Fortunately the roadworks that covered half the course in the morning were removed less than 30 minutes before the first rider was due to depart meaning the race was over the full 10 miles.
The promoting club’s Kevin Lavelle was the first rider off for what was his first time trial in many years and returned a respectable 28:29. Port Talbot Wheelers’ Matt Smith set the early pace with a solid 23:04 until Cardiff Ajax CC’s Sam Utting, riding only his second 10, stopped the clock at 22:34.
However, just ten minutes later, his 16 year old team mate Joe Rees moved into the top spot with an impressive 22:22. That time stood for a further twenty minutes until Cwmcarn Paragon’s Carwyn Davies managed to displace the youngster with a 22:19. All eyes then turned to the last man off, local fast man Ioan Smallwood of Cardiff Ajax CC. Smallwood didn’t dissapoint finishing in a remarkable 20:57.

In the woman’s competition Claire Hann (Bristol & District Triathletes) was first to finish with 25:04 putting the pressure on her rivals. Danielle Flawn (Tredz Bikes) was next across the line but her 25:58 failed to displace Hann. Attention then shifted to Jasmine Bowyer of the promoting club who finished shortly after in 25:54 to take 2nd place behind a victorious Hann.
The veteran’s competition was incredibly close with just 5 seconds separating the top 3 on standard; however there can only be one winner and that was John Vickery of Cwmcarn Paragon.
The orgainser would like to thank the timekeepers and members of Cardiff Ajax CC and Cardiff JIF for helping out on the day.
