After a tough race in the Women’s Tour of the Wolds, Elizabeth Banks sprinted to victory from a small group in Louth
The SunSport Velo rider, winner of the Capernway Road Race last weekend, was one of six riders to make the key break who held off the chase from behind on the four finishing circuits of the town.
Second in the sprint was the Isle of Man’s Anna Christian from Storey Racing’s Chanel Mason. Team Ford Ecoboost’s Nikki Juniper, crashed on the final lap of four through Louth and we hope she is okay as it was a very heavy fall.
The neutralised part of the race was extended as the race waited for a rider to regain her place in the peloton.
Once the flag had dropped, so were many of the riders. The pace at the front of the race shot up and on the very hilly roads, that proved too much for many of the women who were shelled from the peloton getting ever smaller. As the race went on, the peloton kept on splitting and no wonder with the speed of the first hour a very quick, for these roads, of over 41 kph.
Nikki Juniper, a multiple winner of the Women’s Series, leads the break into Louth
On the single lap of the Nettleton circuit, a break escaped and looking at the names, it was no surprise to see them opening up a gap. Christian, Juniper, Mason and Banks were joined by a duo from Team WNT in the form of time trial champion and record holder Hayley Simmonds and Natalie Grinczer.
The group quickly established a minute’s lead over the chasing group, which stretched out to 70 seconds as the front six approached Louth and the finishing circuit. Behind, the Drops cycling team dominated the chase group and were keeping the break honest and whilst the gap was coming down as both groups were drilling it around the streets of Louth, the leaders never looked like being caught.
And so they weren’t with Banks getting her biggest win to date in a race that did the Women’s National Series proud.
