(by Dot Tilbury)

There was a good turnout of 269 competitors at the NSC last Tuesday night for the eagerly anticipated opening round of Team RL360 Isle of Man’s 2017 Youth League.

Poppy Clayton got the series underway in impressive style, powering away from the field to take a clear victory in the born 2012 & later category. Seamus Hall edged out Oliver Kennington for the runners-up spot and Max Wardle broke free from the chasing pack to claim fourth. Kieran Binns pipped Gracie Evans in the bunch dash for fifth.

In the following novices race Lukas Wooton had the edge on Jackson Roberts and leading girl Clodagh Briercliffe in the fight for the number one slot. Lewis Stephens was a lonely fourth and Freddie Palmer was too quick for Orry McSevney in the battle for fifth. Elijah Clague outgunned Pheric Lennon, Ewan McCubbon and Charlotte Quayle in the fight for seventh, while the fast finishing Harper Quayle made a late surge to grab 11th from Lily Jones.

Finbar McSevney led from start to finish in the born 2011 class, crossing the line well ahead of Sam Wolstencroft and Bobby Kewley in second and third respectively. Dylan Honeyman clipped off the front of an eight-strong chasing group to bag fourth, with Charlie Dormer ousting Bobby Kerruish for fifth. Abigail Cowell was the first girl in eighth place.

There was drama in the born 2010 age group when Stanley Kinnish collided with a back marker when leading breakaway partner Brad Le Geyt in the final sprint for the line. By the time Kinnish had recovered his momentum Le Geyt had slipped through to take the win. Billy Kneen led Liam Blake, Kylan Murphy and Daniel Minay home for third, closely followed by Harrison Skillan in seventh place and top girl Lula Kinnish in eighth. Max Messenger and Thomas Hutchinson rounded off the top ten leader board.

In the born 2009 event Peel girl May-Saa Smith and Eddie Dillon went from the gun and quickly built up a sizable gap. Dillon found the pace too quick at the front and dropped back only to be replaced by chaser Tom Pickavance who overcame Smith in the final rush for the chequered flag. Cameron Hounsell pipped Dillon for the final place on the podium and Zach Jones held off Abi Clayton, Florrie Thomas and Henry Dormer in the tussle for fifth.

Alec Sorby and Freddie Griffin rode away from a leading group of eight riders to fill the top two positions in the born 2008 race. The injection of speed by the two frontrunners split the remainder of the group to smithereens, with T.J.Teare emerging from the wreckage to secure third. Joel Long and Deaglan Blake were fourth and fifth, with best girl Fearne Bregazzi leading in Charlie Williams and George Kinnish for sixth.

Making his move on the final lap, Cian Howard shot out of the bunch for a decisive victory in the born 2007 class. Rio Kelly outsprinted Orry Lund for second and Jordan Carter got the better of Charlie Scarffe and James Kinrade in the gallop for fourth. Florence Griffin took the girls’ prize in seventh spot.

In the born 2006 & earlier grouping Kiera Prentice gave the girls their second overall success of the night, edging out Ivan Sorby in the sprint for the line. Callum Salisbury kept Nicola Quaye and Ella Griffin at bay in the rush for third.

Completing the double, Cian Howard was the comfortable winner of the combined under 8 and under 10 racing bikes. Rio Kelly came out on top in his struggle with Orry Lund for second and Charlie Scarffe fronted Freddie Griffin and Charlie Williams for fourth. Eddie Dillon was the first of the U/8 riders in seventh place and Fearne Bregazzi the leading girl in ninth position.

Six riders broke away in the early stages of the U/12 racing bikes. They stayed clear to the finish where Tyler Annis grabbed the honours ahead of Niall Colquitt and Owen Collins, with Ivan Sorby, Frank Kinnish and the hard-working Drystan Sewell just behind in fourth to sixth places respectively. James Scott was seventh and Sophie Smith the first girl in eighth spot.

Fresh from their prestigious team victory in the recent Youth Tour of Scotland, Max Walker, Adam Scarffe, Will Corkill and Tosh Teare dominated the U/14 & U/16 racing bikes. The quartet attacked from the start and left the rest of the field in their wheel tracks to fight over the minor placings. Walker got the verdict in the final sprint ahead of Teare, Scarffe and Corkill. The ever improving James Harrison outpaced Aaron Lund and Amelia Sharpe for fifth, with Matthew Cooil the top U/14 finisher in tenth place.
