Report: RL360 Youth League Isle of Man

A marked improvement in the weather encouraged a total of 328 competitors to sign-on at the NSC last Tuesday night for round four of the Team RL360 Isle of Man’s youth league.

No doubt inspired by Manx girl Anna Christian’s terrific ride in the Tour of Yorkshire, the girls won four of the eleven classes outright.

Poppy Clayton got the ball rolling with her fourth success of the series in the born 2012 & later category. Cameron Eyres was a close second and Tara Nelson edged out Noah Hutchinson in the battle for third. Newcomer Charlie Quine beat Seamus Hall and Oliver Kennington in the rush for fifth, with David Leece holding off the chasing pack to grab eighth. Charley Skillen and Isabella Edwards rounded off the top ten.

In the novices event Isla Mulholland powered away from the field for a clear victory. Lukas Wooton was a solid second ahead of Aedan Le Roux who overcame Aditya Varshney and Clodagh Briercliffe in the race for third. Jackson Roberts outran Sophie Halligan, Orry McSevney and Elijah Clague for sixth, while Freddie Palmer caught and passed Harvey Wagstaffe in the closing stages to claim tenth.

Finbar McSevney continued his winning ways in the born 2011 class, outsprinting Jacob Wilson to maintain his unbeaten record. Charlie Dormer ousted Bernat Munoz-Fite for third and leading girl Abigail Cowell led the fast finishing Bobby Kerruish over the line for fifth. Toby Costain and Joshua Moffitt came in separately to claim seventh and eighth, with Dylan Honeyman getting the better of Jack Monaghan for ninth.

Laxey’s Stanley Kinnish came from behind to pip Brad Le Geyt for the honours in the born 2010 age group. Kylan Murphy was a safe third and Harrison Skillan was too quick for Billy Kneen, Max Messenger, Lula Kinnish and Daniel Minay in the charge for fourth. Conor Madsen-Mygdal grabbed ninth ahead of a chasing group of five riders spearheaded over the line by Liam Blake.

The impressive May-Saa Smith outgunned five other riders to take the top slot in the born 2009 race for the second week running. Tom Pickavance was second closely followed by Abi Clayton, Eddie Dillon, Harry Beattie and Zach Jones in fourth to sixth places respectively. Cameron Hounsell and Henry Dormer were seventh and eighth, while Florrie Thomas beat Finn Collister in the group gallop for ninth.

Seven riders contested the finish of the born 2008 category with Alec Sorby eventually getting the verdict ahead of Joel Long, Freddie Griffin, Deaglen Blake, T.J.Teare, Charlie Williams and first girl Fearne Bregazzi. Ryan Nelson was a lonely eighth and Bob Radcliffe kept Leon Murphy at bay in the tussle for ninth. Sam Colquitt led the rest of the field home in 11th spot.

Orry Lund picked up maximum points for the first time in the born 2007 event, outgunning breakaway partners Rio Kelly and James Kinrade in the surge for the chequered flag. Jordan Carter maintained fourth after losing contact with the leading trio in the closing stages. Oscar Gaylor was fifth and Florence Griffin the first girl in sixth place.

A seven-strong bunch circulated at the head of the born 2006 & earlier grouping from start to finish where Kiera Prentice won the sprint. Ivan Sorby and Mairi Harrison filled the remaining places on the podium, with Chloe Dillon, Callum Salisbury, Blae Cain and Ella Griffin just behind in fourth to seventh positions. Nicola Quaye, Sophie Smith and Sam Cunningham rounded off the top ten leader board.

In the combined under 8 and under 10 racing bikes Myles Le Geyt weaved his way through a leading group of twelve riders to snatch the win from Rio Kelly and Alec Sorby. Eddie Dillon was the best of the U/8 riders in eighth place and Fearne Bregazzi the best girl in tenth position.

Niall Colquitt left nothing to chance in the under 12 racing bikes, attacking from the gun and time trialling to a well-earned solo victory. Owen Collins outsprinted fellow chasers Tyler Annis, Ivan Sorby and Drystan Sewell for the runners-up spot, with Frank Kinnish leading a second group of pursuers home for sixth. Nicola Quaye was the first girl in seventh place.

Fourteen riders stayed together for the entire twenty laps of the U/14 & U/16 racing bikes. At the finish it was Max Walker who came out on top in the frantic group gallop for the line. Will Corkill and the ever improving James Harrison were second and third, with IOM Youth Tour winner Amelia Sharpe the top girl in 14th position.
