Report on the Ilkley CC 2 Day Stage Race won by Julian Varley, stages won by Varley, Adam Robinson, William Corbett

6th-7th May
This weekend 25 teams of three riders contested the 4th edition of the Ilkley CC 2 Day Stage Race. The start list contained a plethora of talented riders, which ensured for aggressive and exciting racing through out the weekend.
The weekend’s racing began with a short (1.5 mile) prologue individual time trial. It was a chance for those who could make a short sharp explosive effort to become the first wearer of the overall leaders yellow jersey. Adam Robinson (Team KTM UK) won the prologue and took the overall lead but no significant time gaps were created in the race for the overall win.
The afternoon saw a road race around the classic Penny Pot circuit, an undulating, technical course with an uphill finish on Bland Hill. The race was aggressive from the gun, and a breakway group of six was formed by attacks on Oaker Bank. The breakaway group consisted of Tim Wilcock (G.S Metro), Kieran Savage (Team B38/Underpin), Billy Harding (Paul Milnes), Harry Hardcastle (Wheelbase Cabtech), Steven Guymer (Feather Cycles) and Julian Varley (Team KTM UK).
The peloton was eager to catch the breakaway group with some strong teams missing the break however many of the attempts to bridge to the leaders were closed down by teams who had team mates up the road. However a group of three strong junior riders; Toby Tanfield, William Corbett (both of Brother NRG) and Jim Brown (PH-Mas Paul Milnes) managed to bridge across to the six man break with two laps to go.
The now nine man break worked well together and knew they were not going to be caught with over 2 and half minutes over the main bunch as they started the final lap. The break then began to stalk each other as they descended from the bottom of Penny Pot Lane.
At the bottom of Bland Hill with 1km to go Tim Wilcock (G.S Metro) launched a big attack as the gradient kicked in. This created a spilt in the group with only Kieran Savage (Team B38/Underpin) following Wilcock. However as the group began to disintegrate, Julian Varley (Team KTM UK) rode at a blistering tempo up the climb and rode past the leading duo who tried to jump onto Varley’s wheel, but after 55 miles of racing were unable and Julian Varley crested Bland Hill first to take the win.
An impressive ride also by Jim Brown who came home in 2nd after bridging to the breakaway.
The racing continued the next day with a downhill 5.5 mile team time trial. A tailwind was always in play, which meant the times would be quick, though it would prove difficult for those on restricted junior gears. G.S Metro won the stage, just 1 second in front of Team KTM UK and only 2 seconds from Prologue Racing Team who placed 3rd.
It was now all down the final road stage to determine the Overall, Points and King of the Mountain’s jersey’s. The final stage, though only 36 miles in length, was run on the notoriously challenging Darley/Dacre circuit, squeezing in over 3,800ft of climbing. Coming into the final stage Julian Varley (Team KTM UK) led the overall, but only by 1 second from Tim Wilcock, and also led the points competition, with Kieran Savage (Team B38/Underpin) leading the KOM competition.
From the start, a high pace set by Kieran Savage (Team B38/Underpin) meant that the field reduced quickly the first time up the Harper Lane climb. However the race was stopped after 1 lap to warning the rider’s for crossing the white line. The race however was quickly restarted and just moments later on the descent down Darley Head, Adam Robinson (Team KTM UK),who had won the prologue, broke away solo.
With Robinson posing no threat to the overall leaders jersey, he was allowed to gain a lead hovering around 50 seconds as the peloton continue to be whittled down. However those who were in the top 10 of the overall lead, soon realised they needed to gain time on Julian Varley in order to clinch the overall win. Therefore attacks came thick and fast from the likes of Dylan Flesher (Prologue Racing Team) and Patrick Clark (Team B38/Underpin).

After being away solo for 2 and half laps, Robinson was caught, however this had allowed his team mate Julian Varley in the yellow jersey to stay comfortably in the leading pack without having to chase any overall threats down. On the final lap the field was in pieces across the course as Kieran Savage made a valiant attempt to breakaway solo on the final ascent of the Harper Lane Climb.
However, he was unable to hold off the group of around 11 riders behind and they went round the final turn together. A sprint for the line from this select group was inevitable and the group spilt in two in the final 1km. A strong finisher, William Corbett (Brother NRG) was able to prove his sprinting talent by taking the win across the line from fellow junior Harry Hardcastle (Wheelbase Cabtech).
Julian Varley (Team KTM UK) was able to sprint to 5th sealing his victory for both the overall leaders jersey and the points jersey. His consistency and strength proved for a merited win. Kieran Savage’s (Team B38/Underpin) combative performance across the weekend earned his the King of the Mountains Jersey as well as joint 2nd overall, 17 seconds behind Varley. William Corbett’s (Brother NRG) efforts not only gained him a stage win but joint 2nd overall and 1st Junior. A stellar showing from the junior’s of Brother NRG earned them the team prize.
Many Thanks goes to Ilkey CC and Tim Gill for running this great event and supporting Road Racing in Yorkshire
