Feature Report: Lincoln GP-Mens

After his sensational win in the Chorley Grand Prix earlier this year, Ian Bibby (JLT Condor) showed again why many think he should be riding WorldTour, winning Britain’s biggest classic road race, the Lincoln Grand Prix.

The race was a ‘controlled’ one for the most of the 13 laps, with a break of nine escaping early on on lap two. They were Joey Walker (dad Chris had won the race before), Rhys Howells, Steve Lampier, Charlie Tanfield, Sam Williams, Joe Evans (Madison Genesis), Max Stedman, Ryan Perry (Raleigh GAC) and a rider from Richardsons Trek. The nine became seven though as Perry and the Richardsons Trek rider were dropped and that was the race for the next 12 laps with the break getting well over three minutes and looking dangerous.

Most of the action, seemingly without the benefit of seeing the peloton around the circuit, was in the break as Lampier and Williams forced the pace on the climb through Lincoln and whittled the seven down to five and then three before there was a surprise in store for us at the finish.

First time up Michaelgate it was Tom Moses of JLT Condor leading the peloton still together

Some how, despite doing a lot of work at the front of the chase, James Lowsley Williams or ‘Hank’ as he’s known, had bridged solo to the leaders. The move though didn’t have the desired result of keeping the break away as the peloton, now led by Madison Genesis, was hunting down the break and coming into the final lap, the race had come together and a new break formed over the top of Michaelgate.

The Break

The seven, Bibby, Rory Townsend, Matt Holmes (Madison Genesis), Jonny McEvoy (Madison Genesis), Hayden McCormick, Sam Harrison and Karol Domagalski, led by only 30 seconds or so and team Raleigh GAC led the chase for their series leader Enrique Sanz. The break though had too much firepower and when Jonny McEvoy (Madison Genesis) attacked after the feed, the race was full gas.

He was caught on the final climb of Michaelgate and passed first by his friend and former teammate Ian Bibby and then Townsend and Matt Holmes, also of Madison Genesis. There was no big celebration from Bibby as he crossed the line, a little wheelie to celebrate a massive win.
