Wins for Junior Jess Roberts and Steele Von Hoff at iconic venue, Wembley

There were wins for Junior Jess Roberts and Steele Von Hoff at the iconic venue, Wembley, at round 4 of the Tour Series.

In the Women’s race, Jess Roberts picked up where she left off in Portsmouth last year by attacking late and holding on to win alone whilst in the mens race, JLT Condor put the hammer down to create a very small group from which Steele Von Hoff won his second round of the Tour Series held in London (his first was Canary Wharf).

Men’s Race
JLT Condor moved back into the lead of The Tour Series with a convincing victory at the Wembley Park although they were denied the individual win on the night as ONE Pro Cycling’s Steele Von Hoff powered to victory.

Von Hoff, a previous winner of the Tour Series at Canary Wharf, was a member of a select seven rider group at the front of the race, with the Australian jumping clear to overcome the JLT Condor train, who placed four riders in the top eight.

Whilst JLT Condor won the round and took the lead back, Madison Genesis regouped in the race and chased them for all they worth and were second team on the night and so JLT Condor have just a one-point lead over Madison Genesis, with The Tour Series looking set to be a two-horse race as it nears the halfway point, with BIKE Channel Canyon seven points further back.

In the sprints competitions Sebastian Mora (Raleigh GAC) has a commanding 26-point lead over Rory Townsend in the Wiggle Points Jersey. The Spanish rider won all three sprints on the night with determined ride matched by his countryman Enrique Sanz who was second in the race behind Von Hoff making it four rides for Sanz so far in the Tour series and one win, two second places and a third.

Women’s Race

Meanwhile in the women’s Matrix Fitness Grand Prix Series the Drops team extended their lead at the top of the standings as Jess Roberts of the Liv Epic Coaching team took an impressive individual win to leave the teams battle for the top prize in her wake.

Roberts went clear alone with a handful of laps to go, taking a fine solo win outside the London Designer Outlet, as Drops did enough in the chasing group to pull clear of Team Breeze and Team WNT in the battle for the Series title. The team now have a nine-point lead, the largest so far of their 2017 campaign. Ellie Dickinson is two points ahead of Rebecca Durrell in the fight for the Sprints Jersey.

Jess Roberts: Still a junior and a very talented one beating some World Class senior riders, Jess was riding her first round of the Tour Series in 2017 and the last one she rode was Portsmouth in 2016 – and she won that too! So picking up where she left off was very special for the ‘Liv’ rider. “I am really pleased with the win tonight” a smiling Jess told VeloUK afterwards.

“I just tried to get away and was pleased to be able to stay away. The start was pretty full on and I found the pace really hard but I think around halfway through it settled down even though riders were still trying to get away. I attacked with two to go on the finishing straight and gave it everything”.

“It was really good to be racing at Wembley and the crowd were amazing up the finishing straight. The course was quite technical with the hairpin and if it was wet, it would have been very different. It was good course. The hairpin was tough and the ones at the back were so much further behind. My strategy was to stay near the front so if anything went, I could go with them.”

“I am now going to do Croydon and Bath rounds of the Tour Series and then go back onto the track to train for the European Track Championships hopefully”.

The action remains in London for both the men and women’s Series which resume in Croydon on Thursday 18th May. It will be the third year that the London borough has hosted The Tour Series with the Women’s race at 17:30 and the men’s Tour Series event at 19:30.
