World Cyclo-Cross Champion and Junior Paris Roubaix winner Tom Pidcock heads junior line up for CiCLE Classic whilst recently crowned World Ominium Champion Katie Archibald joins star studded line up for women’s race

With the addition of recently crowned World Ominium Champion Katie Archibald to the WNT Team roster for the second edition of the Women’s CiCLE Classic pro cycle race next Sunday, and with World and European Junior Cyclo-cross Champion Tom Pidcock topping the bill in the 4th Junior CiCLE Classic earlier in the day, Melton is in store for a veritable ‘feast’ of top class cycling action.

Both events have proved extremely popular amongst competitors; the Junior race seeing a full field of 120 take the start with over 60 further entries having to be rejected, and only slightly less in the Women’s race where 116 are currently listed; the unique challenge that the race presents has proved no fear to those entered.

“In our first Women’s race in 2016 just 62 riders took the start, but the interest in this year’s race has been tremendous” , said Race Director Colin Clews, “ and the faith placed in our ability to present a race worthy of classic status in the Women’s National programme by race sponsor Peter Stanton has been backed by the support from competitors who recognise our different type of race”.

In 2016 only 13 survived the arduous 95 kms route, starting and finishing in Melton town centre, but this fact has only added to the events popularity with a top class field containing all of Britain’s major Women’s squads.

“ Last year many teams were committed elsewhere but this year all are here in force and the competition will be a lot fiercer for the top places”, continued Clews. With a £1000 first prize, a prize value unknown for most Men’s let alone a Women’s race in Britain, the race this year features as a round of Women’s National road race series for 2017 and has drawn a field of top Women cyclists from across Britain.

Last year’s winner Rebecca Durell (Drops Cycling) (above) will wear number 1, supported by a full team from Drops cycling but she will face a strong challenge to her crown from Archibald who was a late addition to the WNT Team, and the likes of Wiggle High 5 ‘s Grace Garner who is looking for a local victory near to her home city of Leicester.

But if you are looking for a local favourite, then look no further than Melton’s own Bex Rimmington, or Borne based Sian Botteley who both ride alongside Archibald in the WNT squad. Starting and finishing in the heart of Melton Mowbray, the race will follow many of the roads used by the International Men’s race each April once out in the countryside, with Owston village once again featuring strongly with five passages of the race.

Not just a great junior rider, Tom Pidcock showed he was able to beat the best pros in the country as well in the Durham round of the Tour Series with a solo victory

In total the Women, and the earlier Junior Men’s race will encounter six special off road sectors compared with the International race’s eleven, but they will still face two passages of the notorious ‘Somerberg’ sector and this year the addition of a reintroduced ‘Sawgate’ sector following recent remedial works to bring this up to an acceptable safety standard. The latter will be included in the 15 kms finishing circuit via Stapleford and Saxby Road before reaching Melton for the first time, where the leading riders will contest the Melton Town Sprint awarded by Dickinson & Morris Ltd., before returning 25 minutes later to contest the final sprint around 17.00.

The Women’s CiCLE Classic will start at 14.00 noon from Sherrard Street and finish at the same point, with the Junior Men taking their start at 9.30 before covering the same course, and expected to finish in the town centre around 12.15.

As at the 13 editions so far of the Men’s international race each April, vehicle sponsorship for the event will be provided by Tim Norton Motors (Ford) of Oakham, and TimeFix of Sherrard Street , Melton will once again sponsor the lead timing car and Flower Paradise of Sherrard Street, the Winner’s bouquets.
