Tour Series 2017 – The Top Performers
(In the event of a mistake in the calculations as maths was never my strong point, email me …)
So, the Tour Series 2017 is over and the winners lauded on the podium but who were the movers and shakers in the 2017 series.
A very consistent performer, Enrique Sanz (Raleigh GAC), tops the points table and enjoyed a great victory at Northwich
With luck and the weather playing a huge part in the 2017 series, the team competition soon came down to a two team race – JLT Condor with a team built to win the series and Madison Genesis who just have a strong team and a rider who was a revelation, Connor Swift in his first series.
The team prize is the main one in the men’s series but with the times of the four riders in each team counting in each round, it didn’t take long before lady luck intervened for some teams to take them out of the race for the win. There was still a battle between them however for Tour of Britain qualifying points but for some, just fielding four riders was a challenge with illness and injury.
With the series being on TV and the qualifying points for the Tour of Britain on offer, the pressure on teams is immense. The cost of doing the Tour Series is a lot and I’ve heard some teams say £30,000 and others say half or less than that, but it does of course depend on the riders, the vehicles needed and so on.
The first of the wins for Brenton Jones (JLT Condor) was in Stoke
The last week for me was nine days on the road with hotels for two of them. For the teams, it was more like nine days of hotels and with riders and staff, plus the fees to enter the series, fuel, food and so on, the cost soon mounts up.
With the pressure on teams and riders comes a change of tactics compared to a normal crit. Tactics which some will view as negative on a race. IE, a team may have three riders in a front group but because they need to protect their fourth rider, if something happens to him, it was not uncommon for the team to go back for them and why we saw team time trials within a race at times.
It also meant that there were two races within race. Teams not worried about the team award, would do their best to win the individual and if a team was more pre-occupied with their team position in that race, other riders could benefit from that. But for all the possible negative aspects, there were positive aspects too such as brutal racing when a team sensed blood.
In Northwich, Madison Genesis put the hammer down to put JLT Condor under pressure
IE, a team would hear one team telling a teammate to slow and the rivals would put the hammer down to try and split the race especially if the conditions were tricky. Some teams had issues with tyres for example where as a team like JLT Condor made sure they had what was needed (28mm Continental tubulars) which even if it didn’t stop them crashing, did give them a good chance not too.
In the team competition, JLT Condor and Madison Genesis dominated it whilst Bike Channel Canyon got a win (team and Individual) in Aberdeen with an audacious move off the front with three riders. Individually, there were many highlights.
Winners overall of the Tour Series were JLT Condor
… continued after advert
The event does not do an individual classification so as a matter of interest to see which riders had the most impact, I did my own, allocating points to the top 10 in each race. The top points scorer was Enrique Sanz (Raleigh GAC) just ahead of Brenton Jones (JLT Condor) and those two riders were well ahead of the next rider, the revelation of the series, Croydon winner Graham Briggs (JLT Condor) and Connor Swift (Madison Genesis) who had two wins and a brilliant second at Durham.
Unlike last year where Jon Mould dominated the wins with six, two riders had two each, Swift and Jones with the rest of the victories shared by different riders from a 17 year old Junior in Tom Pidcock to a seasoned world tour professional in Enrique Sanz.
It was quite a series and the British scene now turns its attention to the road racing in June with a few events (not many) before a mix of road races and town centre crits in July.
Sebastian Mora of Raleigh GAC won the only individual competition in the Tour Series, the Points jersey, with a dominant performances round by round.
