Women’s National Road Series: Curlew Cup

National Women’s Road Series reaches round five this weekend as the teams head north for the Curlew Cup.

The 6th edition of the Curlew Cup Sponsored by Northumberland National Park will take place on the Sunday in the morning and will precede the Beaumont Trophy Road Race which will take place in the afternoon.

The Curlew Cup is the fifth of nine races in the National Women’s Road Series which runs from April until August. Elizabeth Banks (formerly of SunSport Velo, now riding for Storey Racing) got off to the perfect start at the series opener, the Tour of the Wolds, before Wiggle High5’s Grace Garner was victorious at the Essex Giro. Alice Barnes (Drops) topped the podium at the Lincoln Grand Prix before Team WNT’s Katie Archibald picked up the win at the CiCLE Classic in Melton Mowbray.

The Curlew Cup in Northumberland is the second of three races in June, with the Otley Grand Prix in West Yorkshire to follow after the British Championships on the Isle of Man. Storey Racing’s Chanel Mason is the series leader after four rounds of consistent riding throughout the Women’s Road Series.

Mason has 60 points, four clear of her nearest rivals Sian Botteley (Cycle Team OnForm) and Grace Garner (Wiggle High5) with both Mason and Botteley set to race in Northumberland.Katie Archibald, winner last time out and in great form in the Women’s Tour is a hot favourite while multi series winner Nikki Juniper’s comeback from injury continues as the 2016 champion lines up for Team Ford Ecoboost.

Team Breeze have selected a strong squad one week out from the Road Championships, with the likes of Mel Lowther and Emily Nelson looking for a strong result ahead of the trip to the Isle of Man.

The Curlew Cup will be based around the villages of Stamfordham and Matfen with the start/finish in Stamfordham. These two villages successfully hosted the first four editions of the Curlew Cup which was launched in 2012 and won by Dame Sarah Storey.

In 2013, it was won by one of the world stars in Women’s racing Hannah Barnes and in 2014, the event was won by Katie Archibald who went on the represent Scotland in the 2014 Commonwealth Games. In 2015 the race was won by Laura Massey and in 2016 by Nicki Juniper.  The race will start at 9am. Competitors will complete 3 laps of the 22.3ml circuit which will also be used in the men’s race. The total distance will be 66mls (106kms) The riders will climb the Ryals three times on the circuit. This is a change from previous editions of the race and it is hoped that this change will provide a testing challenge for the riders.
