Women’s Tour of Reservoir Stage 1

Stage 1 of the Women’s Tour of Reservoir saw Melissa Lowther (above)solo to victory ahead of Hayley Simmonds with a big gap back to the rest

It was a day when the course saw the field of almost 100 starters decimated by the wind, the hills and the pace of the racing. It conditions unsual for the race which is normally held in March, the first action came with a breakaway; Molly Patch (Fusion FT Fierlan), Emma Lewis (Aspire Bicycles/HSS Hire) and Sian Botteley (Cycle Team OnForm).

The early break which was clear for a long time before a new group formed out front

The lead never got very big and on the second of five laps, the peloton reeled them back in. Another break then escaped, nine riders in all, and the peloton didn’t seem concerned or were just physcally unable to stop the gap from growing bigger and bigger. After her earlier efforts, the rapid pace in the front move had caught up with Botteley as she dropped back with two laps remaining, by which point the lead was up to four minutes from the chasing peloton.

The remaining eight continued to push on out front although sensing the danger, the peloton – including series leader Chanel Mason of Storey Racing – responded to bring the lead down to two minutes twenty seconds approaching one lap to go. But the attacking racing wasn’t over as Simmonds and Lowther made the next move and escaping the rest of the break before Lowther made one more throw of the dice to escape Simmonds and win the stage and the leader’s jersey.

The nine up break cross the reservoir before more attacks saw Lowther and Simmonds escape.
