Tour of Reservoir: Stage 2 (Men)

The second stage in the Tour of Reservoir was a corker of a race although unfortunately on such a course with no short cuts etc, we didn’t get to see much.

The race started in Edmundbyers, bringing the village to a halt as the 100 plus riders lined up including the yellow jersey Karol Domgalski. At 1.45, the mens’s race was off and running and what we saw first within a lap of the small circuit around Derwent Reservoir, was a break well established with Connor Swift (Madison Genesis), Sebastian Mora (Raleigh GAC), Jack Pullar, Graham Briggs, Eliott Porter, Rhys Howells.

Quite a while later, on top of the long long climb out of Blanchland, Horseshill Hill (4 to 5 miles long up and down), the break was still leading by several minutes and behind, carnage.

The chase group numbered only five and behind it was a mad scramble to get back to the yellow jersey group after the race had split wide open. A lap later, and the break had split as the riders Pullar and Briggs went for the KoM with the rest of the break 30 seconds adrift.

Right:  yellow jersey Karol Domgalski.

The peloton meanwhile had seen a regrouping and was now much larger with One Pro having numbers around their yellow jersey rider. Behind though there were still a lot of stragglers falling further and further behind.

The final lap saw the break now numbering three after Connor Swift (Madison Genesis) bridged across whilst Howells, Mora and Elliott continued to chase them. Behind the break, it was carnage again as the chase group led by Scott Davies, only numbered around eight riders.

In the distance over the moors there was group after group chasing and by the time the riders got back to the Reservoir, things were changing and now only Swift and Briggs led with the peloton of 20 or so riders chasing in sight of them over the dam wall.

Even after all that distance and time in the wind and hills, the race was still frantic and another twelve miles later and it was all change at the front as a new break of five had escaped a few seconds clear of the peloton.

The hammer was well and truly down and it was a mad scramble over that final lap with Tom Moses jumping clear to join teammate Ian Bibby and then hit it at the bottom of the final climb to win the race ahead of Bibby. Jonny McEvoy (Madison Genesis) got the better of Dexter Gardias for the final podium spot for the stage whilst Tom Stewart went all out and got across the line ahead of his teammate Domagalski to clinch the overall.

One Pro’s Sam Williams leads the chase

The break holding their lead well on the first of the big laps

Picture says it all – race all over the place as they ascend Horseshow Hill for the first time chasing the leaders

On the second lap however the break split as Pullar and Briggs went for the KoM

Elliott Porter leads the four left from the break

Connor Swift (Madison Genesis) leads the three up break the final time up Horseshoe Hill

Scott Davies leads what is left of the peloton with groups spread out behind them on the ribbon of tarmac through the moors

Two laps to go and Connor Swift of Madison Genesis along with fellow Donny chaingang rider Graham Briggs lead by 15 seconds across the dam wall.

One Pro were now on control of the chase with a sizeable group

Lap to go and Dexter Gardias leads Liam Holohan (Metaltek Kuota) with Hayden McCormick, Jonny McEvoy (Madison Genesis) and Ian Bibby (?, can’t see faces so guessing the last two riders!).
