Tour de France: Stage 5

Three years after Vincenzo Nibali rode to the top step in the Italian champion’s jersey, Astana’s Fabio Aru soloed to victory at La Planche des belles filles. In the overall ranking, Geraint Thomas and Chris Froome swapped positions with the three-times winner is back in the yellow jersey.

193 riders started stage 5 in Vittel minus Mark Cavendish (Dimension Data) after he fractured his right shoulder blade and Peter Sagan who was DQ’d. A break of eight packed with stars riders went clear from the gun: Jan Bakelants (AG2R-La Mondiale), Mickaël Delage (FDJ), Edvald Boasson Hagen (Dimension Data), Philippe Gilbert (Quick-Step Floors), Thomas De Gendt (Lotto-Soudal), Thomas Voeckler (Direct Energie), Dylan Van Baarle (Cannondale-Drapac) and Pierre-Luc Périchon (Fortuneo-Oscaro).

Tsgabu Grmay (Bahrain-Merida) chased in no-mans land in between for a while before he was instructed to wait for the peloton. From km 20 to km 30, the time gap was 3.30 and whilst Sky seemed happy for them to go, BMC Racing Team decided to chase the breakaway down. After 50km of racing, the deficit of the peloton was stabilized at 2.30.

BMC at the head of the peloton for more than 100km
In the break, Boasson Hagen won the intermediate sprint (km 102.5) whilst Bakelants sped up to take two KOM points at the côte d’Esmoulières (km 107.5). Delage and De Gendt couldn’t hold the pace on the climb and six remaining leaders had the same advantage over the peloton with 45km to go: 2.30.

Within 20km to go, some teams finally joined BMC in the chase: Astana and AG2R-La Mondiale whilst out front Gilbert and Bakelants rode away with 14km to go, approaching the final ascent to La Planche des belles filles.

Team Sky then took command of the peloton just before climbing. They reeled Gilbert and Bakelants in with 4km to go. Fabio Aru (Astana) attacked with 2.4km to go and had chosen the right moment.

Chris Froome (Sky) reacted, followed by Dan Martin (Quick-Step Floors), Romain Bardet (AG2R-La Mondiale) and Richie Porte (BMC) and Simon Yates showed he was climing well with an attack to chase Aru. Martin too had a go. The attacking cost Geraint Thomas the yellow jersey and five years after taking his first Tour de France stage victory at La Planche des belles filles, Froome was back into the lead of the overall ranking at the same place.

Fabio Aru: “Before start I had a plan to attack with more or less 3 km to go, I thought it was the best moment in the race. I felt really good, so when we reached that point in a quite small group, I decided to go away. I did my all during these kilometers and I succeed. At the final km I realized that I still have a good gap, so for the first time I started to believe I can do it till the end”.

“This is something unbelievable! My dream came true with this win. I have stage wins at the Giro and Vuelta, but I always wanted to take a victory here at the Tour de France. Last year gave me a lot in understanding of this race. And today this experience helped me a lot. I am very happy to win in the Italian champion jersey, especially in such a nice jersey! I had some hard periods in this season, but my team was next to me, supporting all this time, and I thank Astana for it. Today I won, but almost the whole race is still ahead. So, I will do it day by day. While today we can celebrate a bit! – said Fabio Aru.

Chris Froome: After pulling on the yellow jersey in a fourth Tour de France, Froome summed up his feelings, confirming: “It’s an amazing feeling to be back in yellow. Having said that I know the race is far from over. It’s only just begun for me. I think as a team we’re in a great position, first and second. We can take confidence away from that and I think it gives us options going forward in terms of being able to play both cards.”

“Today went really well. The team did a great job, keeping me out of trouble and then setting that pace on the final climb. If anything we made a little mistake in the final giving Aru that much space to go. But with it being flat before that final kick, I think no one really wanted to be left pulling at that point. [Aru] showed already at the Dauphine he’s in great form and today just confirmed that.”

Richie Porte: “I can’t say anymore for my teammates. They were incredible today, and I think we took it to them [the peloton]. In the final there, Aru slipped away. I’m still happy with my ride for the first mountain stage. I kind of expected a little more but there’s a long way to go.”

“As a unit today, BMC Racing Team were the team that made the race. Michi Schär and Stefan Küng basically rode the whole race on the front and then the rest of the guys towards the end. I thought we were going too fast and told them to slow down, but they actually kept it up and that’s testament to how strong they are.”

“Chris Froome is obviously going stronger than when we saw him at the last race but I think Team Sky weren’t quite what they were last year. Still, I think they have a lot of pressure coming up.”

Dan Martin: “Tough day out there, I felt the heat on the final climb and at times you had the impression you were glued to the road. Fabio was strong, so congrats to him, but despite coming second, I am satisfied. I’m very confident, as I really enjoy racing here and don’t feel any pressure whatsoever. The team is on a roll, we are the best squad in the world, which you can see by taking a look over the victories and list of results since the start of the season.”

“Of course, it’s still early and a lot can happen in the Tour, but so far I’m happy of how things went“, said Dan, who nabbed his second podium in the space of three days, after the one in Longwy, which catapulted him to fourth place in the general classification, only 25 seconds behind the leader.

Philippe Gilbert turned 35 and decided to spend the day in the breakaway, attacking from kilometer zero together with seven other riders and building a maximum gap of 3:30. For Philippe, it was the second time in his career that he got in possession of the most combative prize in a Tour de France stage, and came 12 years since the first, which he received at his debut in the race: “The breakaway comprised many strong and experienced riders, so I guess that’s why the bunch didn’t give us too much space. Still, we worked together very well and pushed the peloton really hard. It’s nice to be on the podium here again and overall I can say it was a beautiful way to celebrate my birthday. I’m convinced there will be other opportunities in the upcoming stages, so I’m ready to try again.”

Simon Yates (White jersey): “I always try,” Yates explained after the finish. “There’s not many summit finishes this year at the Tour and I think you really have to take the opportunity when it comes.” “I knew the climb from previous years. I felt pretty good. Maybe I burnt some biscuits there, but I wanted to try to win the stage so sometimes you have to risk a bit. There’s a lot of strong guys not really very far behind me so it’s going to be difficult to try to keep hold of (the white jersey) but I’ll give it my best shot.”

Bauke Mollema “The whole day we rode very fast because the front group was very strong and BMC worked hard, I think they thought Porte could win this stage,” said Mollema. “We had an average of 44-45km/h the whole day until the steep climb, and everybody came fresh to the bottom and immediately went full gas. It was a very explosive climb.”

“I had to find my climbing rhythm back because I felt it that we have not climbed for a week now. We only had flat stages until now, and those were stages where I didn’t really have a personal goal except for getting safely through the day. I tried to stay with Alberto as long as possible, but at around 2.5kms from the end, it was over for me.”

Alberto Contador: “With the attack with two kilometers to go, I preferred to go a little more steady because it was still long to go to the finish,” Contador explained. “I think it was okay – I continued with very high watts, and came back close in the end.”

“Okay, I lost some seconds in the sprint, but we saved a very hard day. This is a long race, it’s not like a one-week race, and in the Tour de France a lot of things can happen. We have had only had one time trial and one mountain stage, it has been a good test, but I think it will be harder this weekend.”

This is going to be a Tour for riding regular, and I will try to do it. I was more aware of Chris and Richie,” added Contador. “For sure that Aru is a very strong rider, he already showed it in the Dauphiné, but today I had focused more on watching the other two. I have to see the GC carefully, but the differences have not been very significant considering how we have done the climb. This is going to be a Tour for riding regular, and I will try to do it. We’ll see in the Alps, which is the area I like the most, to see if we try something.

“I think this Tour will be open until its finale; it’s different than last year. I think it’s one where it’s important to be steady. If you have one bad day, you can lose everything, and the secret will be avoiding a bad day.”

Romain Bardet: “We climbed it very aggressively. I was a little afraid of the first mountain stage with the heat. But I dealt with it well. I was comfortable when Froome attacked with Porte, and a small group formed that played around till 200 meters. I think that Aru was the strongest today; he was the only one who could attack and create a big gap. So chapeau to him. I am happy with how I’ve started. You had to be tough to hold on. I feel at the right level, and we will see how it plays out over the three weeks. This was a good performance by the legs.”

Nairo Quintana: “A tough first mountain stage, a very fast one from the start, a really hot one – and it ended up not being the best one for me. My goal was not losing time and at the end, when I couldn’t follow the pace, the only thing I could do was give my best and concede as little time as possible. We’re still on day five, and I hope to keep improving from now on, since my body is still recovering its tone after the Giro. I knew Aru was coming to the Tour with strong form, and his attack in the finale wasn’t a surprise – he launched it at the very same point Nibali did when he won here. I think he will be a winning candidate. We must carry on and remain calm, see how we can race on the many mountains still to come. The Tour is still pretty much starting.”

Louis Meintjes said: “It was really fast right from the start, they let a strong breakaway go but they kept the gap small so all day was fast and nervous. The last 2 km was really fast and the guys that had legs left on the finish. It was almost like a sprint finish with a really steep final. I was just a little bit empty when I arrived there“.

Rafał Majka,: “I felt good when I got into a rhythm, but I didn’t have the punchiness to stay with the GC contenders when they started attacking. I think my legs will become better throughout this Tour. There are stages still to come that will suit my climbing style better, so all in all we’re in a good place and are going to aim to improve in the other mountain stages now.”

Arnaud Démare: “You can’t take it easy at La Planche” – “I had a good night even though it’s been difficult to fall asleep after winning yesterday. It’s been a fast stage today. With 20km to go, it’s been too hard to hold the pace. You can’t take it easy at La Planche des belles. It’s a very steep climb! I made the time cut, that’s all I wanted.”
