Tour de France: Stage 14
Michael Matthews wins the battle of the classics kings to win stage 14 of the Tour de France whilst Aru loses yellow with the mistake of an amateur as Froome hits back
Set to substitute his arch-rival Peter Sagan who outclassed him on stage 3 in the first uphill sprint finish, Michael Matthews beat Olympic champion Greg Van Avermaet in Rodez where the Belgian found the confidence by outsprinting Sagan two years ago.
The Australian gave Sunweb a second straight victory after Warren Barguil took the victory Foix. The steep finish favoured Chris Froome to move back into the yellow jersey after Aru was sitting way to far back and with the gaps lost time on his GC rival.
177 riders started stage 14 in Blagnac and at zero kilometre, Thomas Voeckler (Direct Energie) attacked from the gun. He was quickly joined by Timo Roosen (LottoNL-Jumbo), Thomas De Gendt (Lotto-Soudal) and Maxime Bouet (Fortuneo-Oscaro) while Reto Hollenstein (Katusha-Alpecin) reinforced the leading group at km 14. Their maximum advantage was three minutes at km 25 as teams BMC and Sunweb of hot favourites Greg Van Avermaet and Michael Matthews prepared for an uphill finish from very far out.
With the help of Jani Brajkovic (Bahrain-Merida), they maintained the time difference of two minutes for most of the stage. De Gendt won the intermediate sprint and crested the two categorized climbs in first position ahead of Voeckler.
The leading quintet split on the côte de Contrès with 38km to go. De Gendt and Voeckler forged on while their former breakaway companions were brought back by the peloton. With 32km to go, De Gendt rode Voeckler off his wheel and the Lotto-Soudal rider stayed one minute ahead with 20km to go, causing havoc in the peloton with the chase full gas.
De Gendt was reeled in with 12km to go after 170km in the lead. Maurits Lammertink (Katusha-Alpecin) then counter attacked straight away. Damiano Caruso (BMC), Nikias Arndt (Sunweb) and Pierre-Luc Périchon (Fortuneo-Oscaro) accompanied the Dutchman at the front but it was all together again with 4km to go as Arndt and Caruso refused to work.
On the final 10 per cent slopes, Belgian champion Oliver Naesen (AG2R-La Mondiale) took it up first, before Philippe Gilbert (Quick-Step Floors) launched the uphill sprint in Rodez from far out but it was a duel at the top of the climb between the two riders everyone expected, Van Avermaet and Matthews.
The Belgium Olympic champion hit the front but the head wind and the slopes saw him no match for Matthews who timed his effort to perfection and the Australian claimed his second stage win at the Tour de France one year after he did it in Revel.
Splits in the peloton put Chris Froome back in the lead of the overall ranking with an advantage of 19 seconds over Fabio Aru and 23 over Romain Bardet.
Michael Matthews: “It went as expected. We rode all day. We kept the breakaway so close, I knew I’d have very few team mates at the end, but still I had two or three guys with me in the final. It’s a sweet day. Last time here, two years ago, I had four broken ribs. It was the stage I targeted before I crashed. To come back and win is a dream come true.
“I knew it was going to be hard to have a lot of teammates in the final, because we had to ride quite hard to bring De Gendt back. “It was a perfect day.”
Greg Van Avermaet: “The beginning was really easy and then we made the race hard until the climbs. I think we did a really good job to make the race hard which was better for me because then everyone was suffering and I had a little bit more punch in the end. I think we did what we had to do but I got beaten by one guy who was stronger so, in the end, cycling can be simple.”
“With Richie Porte out of the Tour de France, one of the main objectives was a stage win with me. We tried and we were second but there are still some stages to come so I think we can be confident and we can try another time.”
“The finish went how I wanted it to go because there was a lot of wind. I was hoping that I didn’t have to go too early and I think the two Belgian guys, Oliver Naesen and Philippe Gilbert did a good job and I was in a perfect position. Then, I tried to launch my sprint to victory but Matthews was amazingly strong and he deserved the victory today.”
Chris Froome said: “It helped knowing the finish from two years ago, but that was all about the team today. They did a great job keeping me at the front, especially in all the twisting corners at the final.
Without the team there is no way I could have found myself in that position, especially great work from Kwiato [Michal Kwiatkowski] in the final kilometre. In the last 500 metres I was hearing shouting over my radio, they were saying ‘Go, go, it’s blowing to bits.’ It was amazing to hear that.”
“It’s still so close between the main rivals, every second counts and is worth fighting for. If we look at how the race blew up yesterday when Astana tried to control, it, hopefully we can bring the peloton into a calmer situation. That said, it’s been a big week for everyone, and I expect it’s going to be war again tomorrow.”
Fabio Aru: “In the last kilometre I was a bit too far back, and I had to make a big effort to get back on. I got caught out. Today it happened to me, tomorrow it could happen to somebody else. These are race situations. The important thing is, at the end of the day, to be able to fight on. Losing the jersey is not so tough news, given what’s coming up? Logically, I’d prefer to have the lead, but this is going to be a very tough final week, and so not everything is lost”.
“At a kilometre and a half to go the group was already falling apart, and I was too far back. I tried to regain places but it was too late. It’s not a few seconds difference now between me and Froome, but it’s not so many, so the Tour is still wide open. Tomorrow [Sunday] will be a very hard stage, so we’ll try and recover today, then a rest day, which is important.”
Edvald Boasson Hagen: ”The guys did a great job. Scott [Thwaites] and Reinie [Janse van Rensburg] put me in a good position for the final. I tried not to go too deep at the beginning of the ascent but then, a gap opened up and I had to go around riders in order to close it. Afterwards, it was too late for me to fight for the win.
I’m not surprised that Matthews won. He was my favorite today, which is why I stayed close to him all day. Now, we will look ahead. My shape is good and I hope to get another chance to fight for a stage win later in the race”.
Philippe Gilbert: “I was there in the peloton, waiting and waiting, and then, with one kilometer to go, the door opened and I went on the right side to the front. When Naesen accelerated, I turned full gas behind him. I couldn’t wait any longer, because in this kind of situation you lose your speed and sprint if you wait too much. It was a very tough finish and I gave everything out there, so I’m not disappointed at the end of the day”, said Philippe Gilbert after stage 14, on which Quick-Step Floors won the team classification, having placed three riders in the top 15.
Nairo Quintana: “It was a fast stage, and after the wear and tear from yesterday we were finishing at a steep climb which didn’t really suit my abilities. It was also difficult to get to the foot in a good place, because you must keep an eye on any crashes and avoid risks against tall, strong riders whose goal is chasing the stage win.
You think more about your own safety and seek for further chances on the upcoming days. I thought they weren’t going to make that many splits, but that’s OK – sometimes it’s better to remain in one piece that chasing those risky 20 seconds. Let’s see how we can get them back tomorrow and whether our legs continue do well. We must keep trying. We’re more eager after yesterday’s result and the team really trusts me to make it up.”
John Degenkolb: “I died in the last 200 meters,” said Degenkolb bluntly. “I was very motivated for this stage, so I tried really hard. I was up there until the end, I had a good position, but eventually I didn’t have the legs to go until the top at that crazy speed.”
“Of course I am disappointed not to have been able to fight for the victory. It is how it is. I don’t think I did anything wrong; it was just a matter of not having the legs,” he repeated.
“It has been a tough Tour for me until now. I believe the crash has caused a little setback for me and of course in the previous weeks, I worked hard for Alberto. But it is what it is, I will keep trying, the Tour is not over yet. We have to see how it goes after the rest day. The stage on Tuesday could be a good stage, so will the day before the TT, and Paris of course.”
Alberto Contador (finished in 24th place and also lost 22 seconds) “I was a bit far in the back, and yeah, there were some gaps. It’s evident that I don’t like to lose time. I started a little too far back, and I saw Aru which surprised me, but then I still could move up quite some places,” explained Contador.
“The three-second rule doesn’t apply today because it was an uphill finish. Tomorrow is another tough day. For me basically I want to get safely through the stage and then benefit from the rest day to recover as much as possible.”
Simon Yates: “I lost a few seconds to the guys at the very front there but I was in good position, as always I gave it my maximum and I am happy with that,” Yates said. “I put a bit of time into other guys that are close to me as well so it was a good day all round.”
“From the bottom to the top (of the climb) it was sprinting full gas. If you were a little bit caught out there was nothing you could do.
“There was a bit of wind out today and we really did a great job of keeping position. We were always in the front, whenever there was a slightly dangerous moment we were there, and I think we had a great presence today.”
