Final Press Release – Race Round up

The 2017 ORRO Tour of Sussex which took place from 6th – 9th July swept graciously through every corner of the county.

Stage 1 – Ditchling Beacon Individual Time Trial
With riders arriving at the beautiful Westmeston Village Hall from 16:00 to go and ride a sneak preview of the famed Ditchling Beacon, the ORRO Tour of Sussex organisers could see that the race would be hard fought form the very beginning. With the first rider leaving the start promptly at 19:30, and expected to complete the course in around 7 minutes, the Beacon was awash with cycling fans screaming for their favourite.

Once the faster times came in, it was evident that the riders were beating our expectations, and it looked like some may even break the 6 minute mark! With the race coming to a close, Stage One winner Joseph Murray of London Dynamo arrived at 6 minutes on the nail, with James Hywel-Davies of Latchem Sunwise 1 second behind him, and Pete Morris of Team ASL a further 2 seconds back.

Joseph was awarded both the ORRO Bikes yellow and Brewin Dolphin blue jerseys, although James would take care of the blue jersey the next day.

Stage 2 – Goodwood House Team Time Trial
Knowing there were several very gifted time-trialists in the race, this would be the first major shakeup of General Classification. Teams started in alphabetical order, and with a tough little climb up past the Goodwood Sculpture Park and Racecourse, they would need to work hard to stay together. At the finish line the teams started to come across with some very fast times, with Team ASL as the eventual victors, posting the fastest time of 14:46. In second place were London Dynamo with 15:05, and Paceline RT were in third place with 15:10.

This put Pete Morris of Team ASL into yellow on the day, with Paul Newsome in second place 14 seconds back, and Joseph Murray in third place at 16 seconds – also taking the blue jersey.

Stage 3 – Goodwood Motor Circuit
With General Classification being so tight at the top, everything was to play for on the flat but challenging Goodwood Motor Circuit, famed for epic crosswinds and Supermarine Spitfires!

From the off, Matthew Downie of Primera Team Jobs set about pushing on from the front to gain every possible bonus, putting himself well into contention for the blue jersey, taking almost all available bonus points on the day. With Pete Morris, the yellow jersey wearer choosing to stay out of trouble in the peloton, the race was pretty much decided by an epic ride from Matthew Downie, taking the win in style, and moving up to second place in the Brewin Dolphin points competition.

Stage 4 – Ladies Mile – Ashdown Forest

Rolling out of the beautiful village of Groombridge and into Winnie the Pooh country, this was always going to be a difficult day, with some riders falling foul of the cut-off time and being eliminated from the race. With Primera Team-Jobs taking the initiative and pushing on again, it was left to the yellow jersey to defend every move, working his Team ASL riders hard to keep the gaps to a minimum.

With the bunch almost staying together, a fantastic solo effort from James McKay of Team OnForm produced an impressive win for the team. Joseph Murray of London Dynamo managed to finish ahead of Pete Morris to move the yellow jersey onto his young shoulders, with Matthew Downie taking the blue. With it all to play for on the last stage, it was getting tight at the top!

Stage 5 – Eastbourne Pier to Beachy Head
One of the best locations to start a bike race, outside a pier smelling of delicious sweet goodies and coffee! After a short delay, the race got underway at 09:15, taking the riders onto Upper Dukes Drive, a tough climb out of Eastbourne; the hammer was put down immediately.

Matthew Downie and his team mate TJ Keys, alongside local legend Richard Cartland, made a break for it – the race was all to play for. Joseph Murray was going to have a tough day defending the yellow jersey from his rivals. With the bunch closing the gap, the leading group was reduced to just two riders. With Richard Cartland being distanced, Matthew Downie took another fine win, and was now in second place overall.

Joseph Murray gave one last effort to hold onto the yellow jersey. By the tightest margin in the history of the event, Joseph was the winner of the ORRO Tour of Sussex 2017, with Matthew Downie in second place and Lewis Winfield in third.

We would like to take the opportunity to thank all of our officials, staff, timing partners, drivers, marshals, racemakers, teams, locations, councils and everyone else who helped us to make the ORRO Tour of Sussex a fantastic event.
