Report: VC Venta Summer Critérium 2

With three days before his twenty second birthday Andy Shackel (Team Wiggle) decided to celebrate early by winning the second of this seasons crits promoted by VC Venta at the safe of road Park and ride site near to Winchester. A depleted entry meant the race was reduced to 30mins and 5laps which the riders seemed happy with as it had rained leading up to the start and intermit idly throughout.

It took around ten minutes for the race to finally get going when Shackel along with Peter Thomas (Sunwise Latcham), Cameron Foster (Team Milton Keynes), James Brickell (Fareham Wheelers) and Michael Guilford (VC Meudon) picked up the speed and eased away from the remainder of the race.

The group of five working hard lap after lap continued until there was only five minutes to go when Shackel put in a couple of quick laps and finally dropped his pursuers, Foster was now chasing at 10secs with Guilford, Brickell and Thomas a further 6secs behind. With a few laps left Thomas picked up a front puncture, he got a wheel but lost a position on the leader board.

At the bell Shackel had 10secs in hand from Foster and Guilford benefiting from Thomas’s puncture closing out the podium positions. Earlier the women took to the course for a race held entirely in the rain. Right from first lap Ashia and Laura Fenwick (VC Venta) along with Jennifer Forrester (Zepnat) and Sarah Hickman (IRIS Racing) formed a good working group and their lead went out very quickly.

At the halfway point Ashia made her move pulling away and this increase in speed caused Hickman to slip back as she was unable to stay with Forrester and Laura Fenwick, but this wasn’t the last of the action as soon afterwards Forrester punctured and had to stop to get a wheel. A quick stop helped her not to lose her place in the race albeit riding around on her own.

The third cat race saw three riders form a group which was never really challenged throughout. Oliver Winwood Bratchell from promoting club VC Venta taking the win with a last lap sprint from Tom Budden (Sotonia CC) and John Woyton (Pro Cycle Hire UK RT).
