Tour de France: Stage 21

Dylan Groenewegen claimed the eighth bunch sprint victory of the 104th Tour de France as he outsprinted André Greipel who concludes the Tour de France without a stage win for the first time.

Delivering LottoNL-Jumbo’s second victory after Primoz Roglic in Serre-Chevalier and the fiftieth for the Dutch squad since they first participated in the Tour in 1984, he’s the first Dutchman to win on the Champs-Elysées since Jean-Paul van Poppel in 1988. Chris Froome was declared the overall winner for the fourth time.

167 riders started stage 21 in Montgeron. They celebrated the end of the Grande Boucle as Chris Froome (Sky) was eyeing his first victory of the year, which is the overall classification of the Tour de France.

Once the peloton arrived on the Champs-Elysées, Daryl Impey (Orica-Scott) attacked and created a front group of nine riders with Imañol Erviti (Movistar), Miki Schär (BMC), Alexey Lutsenko (Astana), Julien Vermote (Quick-Step Floors), Marcus Burghardt (Bora-Hansgrohe), Nils Politt (Katusha-Alpecin), Sylvain Chavanel (Direct Energie) and Dion Smith (Wanty-Groupe Gobert). King of the Mountains Warren Barguil (Sunweb) had a flat tyre but made it back with 32km to go.

Tony Martin (Katusha-Alpecin) attacked from the bunch to catch the breakaway but the whole peloton was reunited with 10km to go. Team Sky took the command of the chase at bell lap. Dimitriy Gruzdev (Astana) tried his luck in the last lap followed by Zdenek Stybar (Quick-Step Floors). The Czech rider was caught with 2.5km to go.

With 300m to go, Edvald Boasson Hagen (Dimension Data) launched the sprint but he was passed by André Greipel (Lotto-Soudal) who looked set for the hat-trick after winning this prestigious stage back to back in 2015 and 2016. However, Dylan Groenewegen (LottoNL-Jumbo) still had energy to hold off the German and take his first ever Tour de France victory.

Reactions

Dylan Groenewegen: “I was fighting with Kristoff for the right wheel. Before that, Robert, Paul and Tom kept me out of the wind. Primoz did a great job by pulling on the front of the bunch. I came out of the turn in second place. The sprint felt like it lasted a century and I just grab it. This is a beautiful day for a win like this. We had loads of critics, but on the most important day for sprinters, we prove we can do it. We won on the Champs-Élysées, that is unbelievable.  This is my first stage win at the Tour. When I was young, I was looking at the Champs-Elysées stage on TV. Now I’m the winner here, it’s wonderful.

Dan Martin: “I am very happy, especially as I wasn’t expecting to finish so high in the GC after that stage 9 crash. It was a hard but at the same time fun race and at the end of it all I am proud of what I’ve achieved here. Our team has tasted success on numerous occasions throughout these three weeks and I’m leaving France with many beautiful memories, but also with a huge desire to return next year and fight again to finish even higher in the overall standings”, said a beaming Dan Martin, who enlivened the race in the mountains every time he had the opportunity, and who now, as a result of his aggressive approach, will climb to third in the World Tour individual classification.

Chris Froome: “It’s just an amazing feeling. The Champs-Elysées never disappoints. There’s something magical about it when you spend three weeks thinking of this moment. It’s just rewarding. It’s amazing to see my wife and my son again after several months on the road. Each time I’ve won the Tour, it has been so unique. All my victories are so special in their own ways. This one will be remembered as the closest and more hard fought of them. It’s a huge honor to be mentioned in the same sentence as Jacques Anquetil, Eddy Merckx, Bernard Hinault and Miguel Indurain. It’s a privilege to be going for the record next year.”

Simon Yates: “I think it’s a great thing,” Simon said of he and his brother’s achievements. “I hope it’s one of those thing that we look back on and see it as a great achievement that we’ve won the white jersey as brothers back-to-back.”

“I tried when I could to attack but also saved energy by staying in the wheels when it was the right time too,” Yates said. “Whenever I have the opportunity to attack I like to race aggressive. I think it’s great for the fans, but riding GC is also about picking the right time to do that and the right time to sit back and I am learning that.

“A lot of things have contributed to this throughout the three weeks. I had a good prologue and it was actually earlier in the race when I made the most difference. Louis had a great ride and clawed a lot of time back on me but I managed to hang on. From the time I joined the team, we knew this is what we were aiming to do – riding for general classification. We approached it like any other race, with no pressure and I think that’s the best way to do it.

“The team did a fantastic job from the very beginning. They know me, they know how I ride and I want to thank them for everything they’ve done the past few weeks.”

Warren Barguil (KoM): “My dream was to win a stage of the Tour de France. Two stage wins and the polka dot jersey, that’s beyond my dreams. It’s been an exceptional Tour. Everything’s crazy: riding on the Champs-Elysées with the polka dot jersey, being on the podium in front of the Arc de Triomphe… Soon I’ll focus on other goals.”

Rigoberto Uran: “This place on the podium is beautiful and brings me a lot of joy. For me the Tour is much higher than the other races. There are 21 days of racing. It’s a race that has a lot of history. No other cycling event has the same level of competition as the Tour.”

“Finishing second to Froome at less than a minute seems pretty good to me,” said Uran. “It’s a quality final podium in Paris, so this is the greatest success of my career. This result is dedicated to my family, friends, my team and everyone who has supported me during the last three weeks. We knew it would be difficult to win the Tour but not impossible, so we gave it everything,” said Uran. “It’s been a great Tour.”

“It was very tight, coming down to the last time trial,” noted Uran. “Everything was up for grabs. The tour was open right until the final time trial. I don’t like to talk up my chances because cycling is a sport where the legs do the talking, and you have to wait until the end, but we knew I was coming into the Tour in good shape,” said Uran. “The most important thing this year was that I lost time in the time trial on the opening day. After that there wasn’t a lot of difference. This gives me hope.”

Charly Wegelius (Uran’s DS) “Many things came together for us to end up here,” noted head sport director Charly Wegelius. “Rigo finally had a clear run at a three-week race without hiccups, on a route that suited both him and our style of racing. His teammates all rose to the occasion and made up for their lack of experience – we had four Tour rookies! – with heart and hard work. I’m very proud of them.”

“Of course when you are racing to win, that’s something you believe in until the very end, so second place takes a moment to sink in,” said Wegelius. “However I think the whole group can look back and be proud that we did our absolute best and feel satisfied in that.”

Romain Bardet: “I can be proud of making the podium of the world’s biggest race for the second time. I’m happy to have his experience at the age of 26. It gives me a lot of confidence for the future. I’ll continue working and I won’t prevent myself from dreaming big. In the mountains, I was part of the fight and I enjoyed it. Unfortunately, I had a bad day yesterday.”

John Degenkolb: “I really don’t know what to say about this,” said Degenkolb, flabbergasted. “It’s of course very frustrating and very disappointing. We had a great opportunity again today and if you puncture with the two riders who are preparing the sprint…

“I was feeling very comfortable; I was super focused, concentrated, and ready to start my sprint when we came onto the last straight. I was in good position when the puncture happened and… Yeah, I don’t know what to say, but we need to forget this. We need to keep on going, and I will win some races this year. I promise.”

Alberto Contador: It has been a very intense Tour indeed, a Tour that I prepared for meticulously and with so much dedication. I believe I sacrificed more than I ever did for this Tour, but sometimes things just do not turn out like you wanted or hoped for. We had quite some bad luck, and fortune decided otherwise. I tried to give the maximum until the last day and to try to make the best race possible.

Of course, we didn’t get the result we hoped for and that we came for, but still I feel proud of what I achieved, and I would like to thank all the sponsors for the big support they gave me. Physically I am really really good, but you know in sports in general, and specifically in cycling, a lot of things can happen that can have a major impact. So when that happens, you only can look ahead, rest, and set new goals. Now, it’s time to rest and disconnect completely and after that set some future objectives.

Michael Matthews (Green jersey) “It’s been a rollercoaster with a lot of highs and lows. The second week was when mine and Warren’s dreams started to come true. We more or less took it in turns with the wins and continued the momentum together, along with the rest of the team. To bring these beautiful jerseys to Paris is really something special and a moment I will remember forever.”
