Report: Parham Park Kermesse

by Graham Robins | Surrey League Rd 13 | Saturday 26th August 2017

The latest round of this season Surrey Cycle Racing League saw the riders returning to the superb setting of Parham House nestled on the edge of the beautiful South Downs National Park, the house dates back to 1577. The event was promoted by local cycle store Southdown Bikes based in Storrington and the double header event consisted of a 13 lap third cat race in the morning followed in the afternoon by 15lap second and third cat race.

The house and gardens were bathed in un-typical warm sunny bank holiday weather as the riders set off on their neutral sighting lap before starting the race proper. Despite several attacks throughout the 64km’s race it all finally came down to a bunch sprint with Ollie Smith (The Cycle Room) taking the win just ahead of bunch.

The afternoons racing on the same course but over 88km’s was again blessed with the sun as riders set out to tackle the course for fifth teen laps. The opening lap saw Jack Freeman (VC Meudon) and James Plumb (VC Venta) trying to force the race along as they quickly built up a lead of ten seconds. The two leaders held their lead for another full lap before the peloton pulled them back.

The regroup didn’t last long as on the fourth lap the was a break of three riders as Steve Calland (Southdown Bikes), Paul Hollingsworth (London Dynamo along with Anthony Roberts (VC Meudon) opened up a small gap with James Plumb in between them and the bunch.

Over the next six laps the leaders built up and lead around the one minute twenty seconds mark. The three looked strong and each was taking a turn on the front to drive the break and this enough to discourage the bunch from chasing. Each of the three leaders had team mates in the bunch and so there seemed no concerted effort to chase the lead down.

On lap eleven Anthony Roberts suffered a mechanical when his front derailleur came loose and jammed his crank arm forcing his retirement. The two leaders Calland and Hollingsworth were slightly distracted by the loss of the extra effort on the turns but they soon saw their lead resume to over minute, a lead they were to hold onto the end.

As the two leaders approached the finish line Calland had too much left in the tank and eased away from Hollingsworth to get his arms up something he has done on this race three times before. The remainder of the peloton came in 1min 28secs later as Declan Egan (Kingston Wheelers) winning the bunch kick.
