Will Turner won the two up sprint for the second stage against Lewis Winfield after an aggressive stage in the Welsh mountains.  Awaiting details on the Overall …

Stage 2 – Junior Tour of Wales 2017

Despite thousands of metres of climbing up the Welsh mountains, stage 2 was decided in a two up downhill sprint with Will Turner getting the win by wheel or so from Lewis Winfield. The two in the break managed to hold off the chase by the peloton by just eight seconds. Michael Parry won that dash for the line. Yellow jersey Tom Pidcock was 5th across the line.

We spoke to the race leader afterwards and asked for his race report. “That was probably the best junior race I have done that. It was mega.”

“Some breaks went away early on and got all the time bonuses and then the main break went and the radios weren’t working so we weren’t getting time checks. Next we hear, it was three minutes. We all just then started working and closed three minutes in under 10 kilometres and then it came back together and we were then all hitting each other”.

“Eventually it calmed down before two riders rolled off the front from which Will Turner won the stage. Going up that hill, all us GC riders were looking at each other so we never caught the leaders. The climb was a lot longer than I remember!”

“Yesterday, I was a bit nervous before the stage as I wanted to win that time trial to give me some tell tale signs of what is to come so pleased. This is good preparation for the worlds, lots of good riders here”.

Second placed Lewis Winfield “I was surprised when we got away really as we just rolled off the front. It was an alright stage and I felt good before the start this morning going over the first few climbs, they started to take it out of me and I started to struggle so I thought I would sit and wait for the right time.”

“Start of the day me and Tom would get in the break to stop others from getting the points, to make it easy for Fred and Jacob but that never really panned out. The Sprint: “We drove up it yesterday and thought the finish was going to be where it was last year but we went round the corner and it wasn’t there and the commissarie told us we had another k to go! At least it was downhill!”
