Tour of Britain Chat: Mark McNally

The Liverpool rider admits he’s always happy to be back at the Tour of Britain and that getting in the break on stage one was a strange one. “I had planned to do that later in the race but it panned out I just ended up in there” he explained.

He has certainly not lacked any racing in the lead up to the Tour – “I think I did seven one day races in eleven days before this and I think the legs are alright. Everyone says it’s a flatter Tour of Britain, an easier Tour of Britain, but yesterday (day 1) was up and down all day. The first 50k of the second stage will be pretty hard and then we’ll see; it won’t be easy but maybe flatter!”

After joking his role in the team is being the translator, Macca added that he’ll be trying for some breakaways and also help the faster guys in his Wanty Gobert team in the finishes as well as throwing some knowledge into the team pot when he can remember the bits he’s raced before that is…..

And the year for him? “I had a good start to the year, then the middle bit was not what I wanted but hopefully I’ll have a strong finish to the season. We still have a fair bit going on after this. The last race isn’t until the middle of October and then I’m getting married at the end of October in Belgium.”

Congratulations to Mark and Pia and good luck for the rest of the Tour of Britain
