Tour of Britain Chat: Rory Townsend

Looking a little tired as he came out of the team’s new motorhome, Rory Townsend began our chat saying after two days, there were a lot of tired riders. “I think the opening days of the race are the most challenging of the route” he explained.

Rory (right) went on to say it felt good at first making the break but the enjoyment soon went. “Once we got over the climbs, there was a fourth one that was uncategorised, and that was a tough one and then we turned onto the coast and it was a block headwind for 80k which made things tough and morale in the group wasn’t amazing. There were times when we knocked the pace back a bit but we pressed on most of the time and controlled it on the climbs”.

“It was good to represent the team out there though. We’re here to get out front and show ourselves off. It is common in Belgian to see crowds out so it’s nice for us to have a race here that gets everyone out like this one does. We’ll keep trying and doing our bit and get stuck in and keep the jersey on TV”.

On stage 3, it was Rory’s teammate Harry Tanfield who did just that, winning the combativity award in the process.
