Vuelta Stage 16

Chris Froome extends his overall lead in the Vuelta a España with a decisive victory on Stage 16’s individual time trial.

The Team Sky rider stopped the clock on a 40.2km from Circuito de Navarra to Logroño in 47’00”, which was 29 seconds faster than runner-up Wilco Kelderman (Team Sunweb) and 57 seconds quicker than third-placed Vincenzo Nibali (Bahrain Merida).

The result means Froome stretches his overall lead to 1’58” over second-placed Nibali and 2’40” over third-placed Kelderman, who climbed one place on the day.

Other than Froome, the day’s big winner was Alberto Contador (Trek-Segafredo), who jumped from ninth overall to fifth by finishing fifth on the day, 59 seconds down on Froome.

Going in the opposite direction on the classification, however, was Esteban Chaves (ORICA-SCOTT), who dropped from fifth to ninth after completing the course 4’01” down on Froome.

Team Sky now have two riders in the top 10 overall, after Wout Poels (Team Sky) climbed to eighth place by finishing seventh on the day.

Chris Froome (Team Sky) “I was riding at the speed I felt best. I wasn’t really getting that many time checks from the car, so I didn’t really know where I was. I was a bit worried coming into the last 6 or 7 kilometres but then I found out I was on track to fight for the stage.

“To extend my lead now and to be in this position with 4 big days of racing left now is obviously a great position to be in, but I am going to take it one day at a time.

“I want to say a massive thank you to the support team at Team Sky. That support structure and being able to focus on the job in hand is a huge part of what I’m able to do.

Looking ahead to the rest of the week, Froome said: “I’ve got a good buffer but the race is not over. I have to keep fighting every day now, but this is one step closer to Madrid. Wednesday will be brutal. Absolutely brutal. From what I can see the final climb is a wall, so it will be a big GC battle”.

Wilco Kelderman (Team Sunweb) “My time trial was always good through the years. Now I’m in top form and top shape and I can see it in the time trial. I’m really happy with that. Now I hope to stay on this level and fight every day, not more than that I think.”

The Vuelta continues on Wednesday with a 180.5km 17th stage ending with a summit finish on Alto de los Machucos.
