Team Press Release
Team KGF is a new British UCI Trade Track Team based in Derby, formed of Dan Bigham, Charlie Tanfield, Jonny Wale and Jacob Tipper.
The team caused a shock upset at this year’s British Track Cycling Championship as they achieved the monumental result of three golds and a silver, alongside breaking the competition record for the 4km Team Pursuit with 4.04.644. This would have placed the amateur team in the top 10 of the 2016 Rio Olympics.
Dan Bigham and Charlie Tanfield took the top spots in the 4km Individual Pursuit, with Dan becoming National Champion with a 4:22.023 and Charlie gaining Silver with 4:22.795. In the 1km Time Trial Dan gained a third national title in 1:03.212.
All of this was achieved off the back of only two months of track specific training. 2017 has also seen Jonny Wale break the long standing British flying 1km record with 57:412. Following this modern-day David and Goliath story, the quartet were inspired to step up onto the world stage.
Alongside Team Manager Ellie Green, Team KGF was formed, riding under the banner of the Karen Green Foundation, a Nottinghamshire charity that supports families of those suffering with Leukaemia. Brother UK have continued their backing of the champion track squad, bringing financial assistance and media guidance. The team will also continue their link with the Brother NRG road squad, utilising the same Giro range with Ultimate helmets and Empire SLX shoes.
The team’s ambitions are high. The aim is not to make up the numbers at the Tissot UCI Track Cycling World Cup competitions against Olympic and World Champions but to stand on that podium with the best in the world. Team KGF have worked alongside the best British manufacturers to develop the fastest equipment available as well as relocating to Derby where they have received huge support from Derbyshire Institute of Sport and Derby Arena.
The combination of these relationships is enabling Team KGF to be fully supported all the way to the highest level of track cycling with the Tissot UCI World Cup, as well as targeting the 2018 Commonwealth Games in Australia.

Mark Goldby DL – KGF Trustees said “Since its formation the Karen Green Foundation has been inextricably linked with cycling and the cycling community so naturally this is a partnership that the KGF trustees and volunteers are delighted about. Just like Team KGF, The Foundation is very ambitious and we are all looking forward to raising further awareness of the help that the Foundation provides for families living with the effects of leukaemia and other related diseases.”
Phil Jones MBE, Managing Director of Brother UK, said: “I’ve been hugely impressed by the performances of Dan, Jonny, Jacob and Charlie this year, having seen them in action in our Brother UK sponsored team, Brother NRG. The dominance of the quartet in the National Track Championships was sensational and I have no doubt that they will continue to dominate the competition.”
In an interview with Dan at the 10 champs, he had this to say about the UCI team project “We have set up a UCI track team; myself, Charlie , Tipper and Jonny, the same team we had at the nationals. We have got the sponsors in and are going full bore for the track”.
It will be Dan’s first time racing World Cups and he intends doing Poland, Manchester and Belarus. Asked what the big picture is for him on the track, he says “I want to go to the Commonwealths and I want to get on the GB track squad. That is what I want to do. It’s a big dream but then I am new to the track. It will be only my second track champs this January so if I can keep progressing, it shows I am worth selecting and putting time into”.
