Result: London Six Day Day 1

After taking the win in the opening 40-minute Madison, the Belgians Kenny De Ketele and Moreno De Pauw backed that up with a 40-lap derny victory and second in the night’s closing Madison – won by Sebastian Mora Vedri and Albert Torres.

The achievement is all the more remarkable considering de Ketele suffered a fractured hip just last month, but he and de Pauw know the racing has only just begun. “My hip is okay, I don’t have much reaction in it so I think it has healed perfectly, I had a lot of support from physios and doctors so I’m really happy with that,” he said.

“The top form sometimes looks easier than it is, I suffer with the top speed so I’m really lucky to have Moreno with me.” With de Pauw adding: “I’m feeling really good, the derny was fast after the first Madison but the legs still felt really good. It’s important to start with a win, leading after the first day is always nice but as we say every year, there are still five days to go.”

The night opened with a 40-minute Madison and immediately home favourites Mark Cavendish and Pete Kennaugh were on the attack, taking a lap solo on the rest of the field. They could not hold their lead until the finish though, with six more teams lapping the field to leave seven duos fighting it out for the final sprint. And unsurprisingly it was reigning champions de Ketele and de Pauw who got the sprint to start their title defence in the best possible way.

De Pauw was not done there, either, going on to win the second Six Day race of the night with a virtuoso performance in the 40-lap derny – taking it ahead of Felix English and Callum Scotson. The next race saw the first four teams take their shot at the two-lap Madison time trial with the Danes of Casper von Folsach and Niklas Larsen setting the fastest time so far of 26.930s – but with 12 teams still to go over the next three days, will they stay in the leader’s hot seat?

But it was the team elimination race that really got the crowd on their feet as Steven Burke took a remarkable victory in the final sprint, with he and partner Chris Latham winning ahead of Spain’s Sebastian Mora and Albert Torres.

And Spain recorded a second consecutive second place as Mora came home behind Larsen in the 10km scratch race, before Cavendish staged a stunning last-lap attack to take a thrilling 40-lap derny victory. “I just let them race and everyone was pretty much attacking each other,” said the Brit. “When you’ve got a motorbike you’ve got much more shelter, then I pulled my foot out and all that energy I saved went. But that adrenaline can run a long time.”

Away from the endurance riders it was Olympic silver medallist Ethan Mitchell, of New Zealand, who shone brightest in the sprinters’ competition, leading the overall standings at the end of Day 1. He set the fastest 200m flying lap time trial, clocking in at 10.337s before going on to lose the sprint final to Spain’s Juan Peralta – who recorded the second fastest time trial.

And although Mitchell again did not take the final race of the sprinters’ night – the keirin – it was consistency that put him in the overall lead with a third-place finish. The keirin win instead went to crowd favourite, Matt Rotherham, who got Britain’s second win of the night.

“I didn’t go my fastest earlier in the night but I could really feel myself going better and better as it went through,” said the man from Bolton.

“I got lucky, Max [Levy] going late on in the sprint race meant I got a free ride up to the front and it was perfect for me, with a half-lap to go I was nice and fresh and had it in it the bag.”

The night opened with the first race of the U21 Talent Cup and it was Bryan Boussaer and Jules Hesters who drew first blood in the Madison, racking up 34 points – the most of the nine teams that all finished on zero laps.
