Team News: Roe Returns to Team WNT

Former British National Circuit Race Champion, Eileen Roe and Luxembourg’s Elise Maes have renewed their contracts with the team for 2018.

Roe (above), who in 2017 became the most successful rider in Matrix Fitness Tour Series history with 5 individual wins to her name, also excelled with 3 top 10 results at Tour de Feminin in Czech Republic as well as 12th place in the final UCI Women’s World Tour race of the season, Madrid Challenge by La Vuelta.

After one year with WNT Pro Cycling, Maes, finished 15th on general classification at the Spanish UCI 2.1 ranked, Emakumeen Bira, as well as three top 15 placings, is flourishing into a great stage racer with climbing being her strongest forte. ‘It was great to have been part of the first steps of WNT Pro Cycling as a UCI team. As a team, we had an amazing progression together and I think when we first met, none of us could have imagined the great results we’d have this season.’ Says Maes.

‘I’m really excited about being part of it next year and looking forward to the new challenges we’re going to face.’ ‘I started the season with Setmana Ciclista Valenciana in Spain, which happened to be our first stage win as a team with Lydia Boylan stepping onto the podium and Katie having some really good podium results – it was great to be part of that!’

Maes continues saying ‘I’ve been consistent in my racing and especially loved the racing in Spain, where I managed to get my first top 15 in a UCI race. Unfortunately, a heavy crash in July put me out of action for a month. Luckily, I could train on the turbo and managed to get selected for the World Championships in Bergen – which was a surprise given the circumstances and a nice way to finish a successful season.’

A rider who relishes in the hectic bunch sprints, adverse weather conditions and the early season spring classics, Eileen Roe says; “I’m proud to re-sign with WNT for another year which could prove to be one of the most important years of my career. “WNT is committed to investing in women’s cycling, not just by supporting our team but also by sponsoring 5 women’s UCI races, two of which are World Tour races. One of the struggles we have in women’s cycling is building a team which has the structure and financial support, and WNT are dedicated in ensuring us riders have everything we need as well as security that the team is here for the long run.”

“In 2017, I enjoyed the freedom, our racing calendar & as a team who were in their first year as professional’s the riders and staff gelled really well together. I’m truly looking forward to a big year with this ambitious team alongside some new team mates & new races.”

Eileen and Elise are the last riders to be announced for 2018 following the announcement of Lydia Boylan, Natalie Grinczer, Hayley Jones, Mel Lowther, Hayley Simmonds, Aafke Soet, and Lea-Lin Teuntenberg along with Austrian U23 rider, Anna Badegruber who signed a two-year-deal at the end of 2016.
