National Trophy: Day 2

After a night of wind and rain, the course was a muddy mess where the big winners were Ian Field (Hargroves-Ridley-Montezuma’s) and Harriet Harnden

National Trophy: Day 2

Day 2 of the National Trophy CX in Shrewsbury today with Youth, Juniors, Women and Men racing in the wind and rain

RESULTS from day 1 are here on VeloUK Videos of the racing (snippets here and there)

Day 2 of the National Trophy Cyclo-Cross at Shrewsbury was a very different one to day 1 as the rain lashed down overnight and into the morning and with freezing cold gales, winter was certainly showing its teeth to all those braving the weather at the Shrewsbury Sports Centre.

L-R: Yorben Van Tichelt, Ian Field and Liam Killeen (Elite men podium)

L-R: Under 23 podium – Dan Tulett, Ben Turner and  Calum Fernie

With the course now back to its Shrewsbury muddy best, the racing was going to be a lot tougher and so it proved. During the course of the day, there were some great battles for the victories as well as some dominating rides in races packed with quality riders.

None more so that the Men’s Elite race where British Champion Ian Field (Hargroves-Ridley-Montezuma’s) ripped the race apart and won as he liked, making it two wins from three in the men’s National Trophy.

The Men’s race saw Ben Turner and Jack Clarkson take an early lead with Field sitting only meters behind and the rest of the big line up thundering along through the mud, the bikes not always going where the riders were pointing them in the slippery mud. Turner, junior world bronze medallist from last season, looked to be a tough rival for Field as the duo took an early lead until a crash for Turner in the woods saw him lose more than a minute and twenty places.

Field carried on regardless, leading by a long way from a three way battle between Yorben Van Tichelt, Liam Killeen and Nick Craig. The latter crashed into a wooden stake and was gapped and never seemed to recover whilst Yorben Van Tichelt and Liam Killeen carried on battling all the way to the finish for the second place with Van Tichelt getting to the line first ahead of the former British champion.

Under 23 series leader, Billy Harding

Junior Harnden the Women’s Winner
Whilst Field had the race to himself, Harriet Harnden and Ffion James dominated the Women’s race and were together until 500 metres to go when James slipped on the last off camber section, Harnden took full advantage and carried on to win from James before the two hugged after the line in a post race show of mutual respect.

Top 3 in the Womens race: Ffion James, Harriet Harnden and Sophie Thackray

Beth Crumpton and her yellow Boardman bike

Harnden, a junior still who competed at the Euros in the Under 23 category, won her first women’s victory of the series. The 16-year-old, from Malvern, had been trailing Ffion James coming into the last muddy off-camber section on the last lap but after getting past James on the steps, the two were side by side as they came to the final off camber section. James then slid off providing Harnden the opportunity to take the victory which she did with both hands.

Series leader in yellow, Beth Crumpton on her yellow Boardman bike, suffered an early crash but battled hard to finish in the top ten and keep her leader’s jersey.

Koppenberg winner and Euros Bronze medallist, Ben Tulett wins Junior race
A winner at Koppenberg in Belgium, and then following that up with a Bronze in the Junior Euros, Ben Tulett repeated his win at the series opener despite suffering a crash early on.

Junior Men: L-R: Cameron Mason, Ben Tulett and Oliver Draffan

The fight for the victory was a great way to start the day’s action as half a dozen or so talented juniors were battling hard at the front of the race. As the race went on though, gaps started to open and Tulett broke the elastic with Cameron Mason chasing hard within touching distance. Tulett held on to win from Mason and Oliver Draffan.

The day also saw a lot of great battles in the Youth events. Starting first were the girls in two races, Under 16 and Under 14 and big entries in both. The under 16 Girls race was won by Scotland’s Anna Flynn whilst Millie Couzens was second and leads the series. Josie Nelson was third. In the under 14 girls, Ella Maclean-Howell was a very happy winner of that race from Grace Lister and Anoushka Minale whilst Zoe Backstedt held on to her leader’s jersey in 4th.

In the following under 16 boys race, it was a tight finish for the win, tighter than probably Joe Pidcock expected as he celebrated long and early and Emile Alexander almost nicked the victory from the talented Pidcock, brother to world champion Tom. Oliver Stockwell was third. In the under 14 boys, another very happy winner was Joshua Tarling who had time to celebrate his win ahead of second placed Christopher Hilbert and Huw Buck-Jones.
