Post Race Chat: Ben Tulett (Junior Series Leader)

The winner of the Shrewsbury round of the National Trophy has had a special few weeks. He was the first of three British winners at Koppenberg recently as Tom Pidcock and Helen Wyman followed up with visits to the top step.

“That was incredible to be part of three British wins” Ben said when we spoke about that race. “Five years ago that would never happened but today it shows how good the sport is getting in the UK”.

Ben then followed that up with a Bronze medal in the Juniors at the Euros. With a lap to go, he was in fifth with two Dutch riders between him and the podium. Ben takes up the story … “the fury came down for that final lap and I had (the late) Charlie Craig in my head. I made an extra push to get the bronze medal that day.”

With those two results to his name, Ben came to Shrewsbury as one of the favourites but the opening lap didn’t go well. “I had a few issues on the first lap and wasn’t feeling amazing after having a cold all week. This was my first muddy race of the year and the course was completely different to Saturday practise”.

Ben quickly came back from that slowish first lap and into the lead. “I knew it was so important to get to the front especially in these conditions and the other riders making mistakes so I had to push on hard”. That he did winning well enough to have time to celebrate at the end.

Ben then explained the big goal is the world championships and whilst cyclo-cross is the focus right now, road racing is called too … Good luck to Ben for the coming races
