Stephen James (Renvale RT), Senior Men’s winner

The Suffolk-based Renvale RT had two winners at the East and South East Championships with company boss Stephen James winning the Senior race and Richard Muchmore well clear in the Vets 50-plus. James initially broke away with Alec Briggs and Michael Butler (Hargroves Cycles), going clear after about 25 minutes.  Muchmore, well-known for coming from behind after a slow start, this time hit the front early, glad of the opportunity to choose his own line on the variable surface.

The course was on slopes above the sailing lake at Stanborough Park – created by gravel extraction for the construction of the A1(M) motorway. On a grey day with occasional drizzle the mud on the many reverse-camber turns remained remarkably grippy. There was one set of high hurdles, craftily set on the climbing approach to the main zig-zags.

Helen Pattinson (Hargroves Cycles) took the Women’s Championship, 87 seconds clear of the next woman – Junior Champion Elspeth Grace of the Welwyn Wheelers, promoters of this excellent event. Junior men’s winner was Oliver Howson (PH-MAS) who just outsprinted Edward Davies (Dulwich Paragon) after the two blue-clad riders had been neck and neck for the whole race.

On the course at the same time the Vets 40-49 race was won by Andrew Taylor (C&N Cycles) who pulled out eight seconds on Matthew Webber (Forest Side Riders) on the last lap. Other winners included Geoff Bores (Vets 60+), Iona Moir (U16 Girls), Oliver Stockwell ( U16 Boys), Anoushka Minale (U14 Girls), Caelen Miller (U14 Boys), Carys Lloyd (U12 Girls), Alfey Amey (U12 Boys), Anna Lloyd (U10 Girls) and Oliver Beale (U10 Boys).
