National Trophy Interview: Ian Field Wraps Up Series

Five times a British Champion, and now four times a National Trophy winner, we talk to Ian Field of Hargroves-Ridley-Montezuma’s

With one round to go at Ipswich, (click here for news on that round)  Ian Field of Hargroves-Ridley-Montezuma’s has clinched the Men’s Series despite a round at Peel Park (Bradford) that didn’t go to plan.

“I got off to a really bad start today” Ian explained after the race. “Between practice and the race, the top section had frozen and I just went into a corner way too fast and went down hard and then never got into a rhythm after that”.

“My back started to go tight on the second lap, and I don’t know if that was because of the crash and I bumped something out… it was one of those days not to have a bad day but I’d put in a big block of training between the Cyclopark round and here and have had it a few times when the round at Bradford has fallen at the time I have put in a big block of training.”

“Last week I did around 25 hours in eight days and with a five hour drive in the camper yesterday (Saturday), it was always going to be a bit of struggle today but I wrapped up the series so I’m happy”.

Reflecting on the series, Ian explained ““I got off to a good start in Derby and consolidated that with a second in Abergavenny and at Shrewsbury, I won there whilst a few people had bad rides there; Fletcher finished quite a way back, so at Shrewsbury I knew it was almost wrapped up.”

For a long time, Ian concentrated on the World Cup series but since he focused on the National Trophy series, he has won it each year. Asked about the switch to the domestic series, he says “When Madison UK came on board (with his team) and they are the UK distributor, so the Trophy took precedence.”

“I’m not sure what will happen next year having won four now. I may go back to focusing on World Cups as four on the trot is something I have ticked off and l may be looking for new challenges again so we’ll see what next season brings.”

Asked when he was a youngster, was the Trophy something he wanted to win when older, Ian replied “Yes, I was always one of the kids who would stay for the elite race and watch the likes of Hammond and Ellis and such like race round in the mud and always wanted to emulate that and never really thought as an under 16 or even as a junior I would as I didn’t have stand out results.”

“I never thought I would win an elite series overall so to get four is pretty special.”

Ian then explained he will probably now get in another big block of training. “I really want to do a good ride at the Worlds on Valkenberg where I have had top 20s in World Cups before and that is a goal I have not properly ticked off.”

“I have been 21st at the Worlds in Tabor a few years ago but would really love a top 20 after finishing 11th and 12th in world cups so it would be lovely to do a big ride at the World Championships and so that is the main aim now along with the National Champs”.

So a warm weather training camp …? “Yeah, Kent ;-)”

Good luck to Ian over the Christmas period …
