Winner’s Bikes: Paul Oldham’s Scott Addict CX

The above bike, the Scott Addict CX is Paul Oldham’s after a few practice laps of the course at Peel Park in Bradford.

Asked to tell us what on the bike is Hope based, Paul replied “we have our brakes, our wheels, bottom bracket and headsets, basically anything with bearings is Hope so its really winter proof and stands up to a hard season. The hydraulic calipers from Hope are running with SRAM levers so braking is so much better on discs. We also have our carbon fibre seat post”

Paul explains that the disc brakes on his bikes have what is called a ‘through axel’ — “The through axel is a bolt that goes through the hub and fastens to each side of the frame so you are not relying on friction like a drop out to hold the wheel in the bike. With through axels, the bike feels a lot stiffer and safer and I think they are a big improvement on disc brake bikes”.

Paul is running a single chain ring as well. “It’s a Hope  chain ring with one thick tooth, one thin tooth so it grips the chain better. Most of the time they are good but in thick mud they can be a problem but keep on top of that by keeping the pit crew busy and they’re alright” Paul explained.

Hope wheels with Hope hubs and carbon rims – “they stand up to a full season of hard abuse” says Paul.

Pedals: “Shimano XTR” says Paul. “I have tried other makes but I always stick to them!”

Paul finishes by saying “The Scott Addict CX is probably the best frame out there. They are such a super light fast racy bike. They have a really good geometry for cross and I ride Peaks on them and everything and they are a brilliant bike.”
