Video: Ian Field talks about his bike …

Five times a British men’s cyclo-cross champion and four times a National Trophy winner after clinching this season’s series last weekend in Bradford, Ian Field (Hargroves-Ridley-Montezuma’s) talks us through his winning bike, the Ridley X 9 XL with Shimano Dura Ace Di2 (two by 11 speed set up – 39 x 46 at the front, 11-25 or 11-27 cassettes) with hydraulic disc brakes, Profile wheels with Challenge tubs on them and in the race at Bradford, he had 17 psi in them.

Asked what is special about the Ridley that he rides is, Ian replied “Ridley’s use a traditional set up with a really high bottom bracket, short top tube compared to a road bike and quite a big seat tube to make easier to carry.”

Talking about the disc brakes, he says “disc brakes in cross have been absolutely a revolution. To be able to stop, and to have that same feeling every time … the thing about the rim brakes was you would go through a muddy section, hit the brakes for the next corner and it would take a whole revolution or two to get the mud off the rim and then they would bite but the discs every time you have bite there straight away. It is a big difference!”

Finally, the bike has a special paint job and of that Ian says thet it gets a nice bit of attention and is also great to have when representing GB at the World Championships.
