News: Major Cycling Events 2019
British Cycling have released the dates for the Men’s and Women Road Race Series in 2019.
The Men’s Series kicks off at Klondike in the North East and includes the Monument, the Lincoln Grand Prix, the grand daddy of the all the events in the national series. Bristol returns but expect a new format for that with a road loop rumoured to be among the changes.
The Beaumont Trophy is back in the national series after being the road race championship event in 2018 whilst a three day on the Isle of Man is one of the exciting events that may be taking place. Another new event is the road race in the South East with the rest of the races being long standing events such as the Tour of Reservoir, Stockton GP, Ryedale GP and the Leicester Castle Classic kermesse.
The Women’s Series too will start at the Klondike, for the first time, before the Lincoln GP and then a favourite among the ladies, the CiCLE Classic. The Women’s Tour of Reservoir is on the calendar as is the Curlew Cup at Stamfordham in Northumberland (Beaumont Trophy). The Stockton Grand Prix is on the calendar as is the new race in the South East before the season finishes on August 18 at the Ryedale GP.
Major Non National Series Events
As well as the National Series road races below, the 2019 season will see many other interesting events and developments with the biggest and bestest being the World Championships in Yorkshire. The British Road Championships meanwhile are to be in Norfolk (details yet to be revealed) whilst the Criterium Championships will be in Rochester on July 21 (Sunday).
As well as the Tour of Yorkshire for Men and Women and the Tour of Britain and Women’s Tour, there is the Tour of Scotland (https://womenstourofscotland.com/) for women and Ride London for both men and women.
One of the most popular races, is the 15th Rutland – Melton Cicle Classic at the end of April. This event will see some big changes and gone is the opening two laps of Rutland Water which is a major revision as the race has had that from the start. The race will now go north of Oakham after a short leg along North Shore of Water passing through several new villages before reaching Wymondham, the organisers (Colin Clewes) home village, where the race will complete small laps which will involve two new Hot spot Sprints past the local Windmill landmark. More on these changes in January …
Masters Racing
Since the days of the Peter Fryer Series was pretty much abandoned by Britisgh Cycling, Vets racing has been the domain of TLI Cycling and the LVRC. In 2019, an independently run National Road Series for Masters (Nat Bs and Regional As) is set to be held over six races nationwide. With 80 rider fields, accredited Marshals, NEG plus professional neutral service there series has support from three sponsors agreed. The full launch of the series is said to be in January. It is likely that for 2019 there will be no specific races for women, or for men in the cats A,B,G,H,I etc as the organisers logistically want be sure they can make the series work. If so, in 2020 they plan to expand to include a women’s series & other Masters categories.
