The final round of the National Trophy CycloCross at Trinity Park in Ipswich, saw an action packed day of some truly fast and furious racing – we have the results and podium pics
Result: National Trophy Ipswich
Report
After the mud of Bradford before Christmas, the final round of the National Trophy was super quick with more than the usual amount of sprints for the win at the finish.
The big winners were Braam Merlier and Beth Crumpton with the former winning his third victory in succession whilst Crumpton sealed her series win with an emphatic solo win.
The course had so many show pieces it was hard to know where to watch it although the barn and the 4×4 test section were very popular judging by the crowds. In the final race of the day, Braam Merlier solo’d to a dominant victory whilst behind him, it was an impressive ride by first year Under 23 Dan Tulett who chased down Johan Jacobs, then rode away for second in the race and first Under 23. Third was Jacobs whilst behind it was a bunch race with so many of the top contenders all together for a lot of the race.
Beth Crumpton, on her special yellow Boardman Bikes CX Elite bike with Anna Kay (Edco Continential) in the barn and clear of the race
In the Women’s race, Beth Crumpton and Anna Kay led the way chased by Sophie Wright all the way to the line where Crumpton, in yellow, had managed to gap Kay to win the race hands aloft and delighted to win the race and seal the series with a victory.
Anna Kay (Edco-Continental) however, did not need to be disappointed as she won the Under 23 category whilst Amy Perryman (Hargroves-Ridley-Montezuma’s) was able to hold on to the wheels of the chasing group of senior and U23s, which dragged her away from the competition all the way to the line for victory in the junior category.
In the Junior Men’s, Lewis Askey not only showed himself out front with an attacking ride including bunny hopping the higher than last year hurdles, but saw his attacking pay off with a victory well celebrated. Series leader Cameron Mason held on to the yellow jersey.
In the other races, Kate Eedy wearing her world champion’s stripes was too strong for fellow world champion Helen Pattinson (Hargroves-Ridley-Montezuma’s), and Eedy sealed the series with a win at Ipswich from Pattinson and Alison Kinloch.
In the vet 40, a surprise for the National Trophy regulars as Eastern region rider Stephen James leapt away from the tandem of Nick Craig (series leader) and Jim Bryan and James held on to win with Craig second and Bryan third.
The 4 x 4 section popular with spectators
In the Vet 50, another tactical and close fought race with Pete Middleton, in the leader’s jersey, riding away to win chased by Tim Davies, his closest rival in the series and Middleton’s teammate Tim Gould. On the finish, Middleton won alone from Gould and Davies.
The Under 16 Girls saw another solo win for Millie Couzens who has gone from dominating the under 14s to the under 16s whilst in the Under 14s, Zoe Backstedt, watched by Paris Roubaix winner dad Magnus and a British women’s champion in days gone by, Megan (mum), won alone and sealed her victory in the Under 14 series.
The closest race of the day was the sprint by Oliver Stockwell to win the Under 16 Boys from Alec Gregory. Both the boys races had small groups at the front battling for the win and in the Under 14s, it was a 1-2 for club Welwyn Wheelers as Euan Woodliffe won the gallop to the line from Caelan Miller. Griff Lewis from Wales was third whilst series winner Ben Askey was 4th.
