Team News: Adam Yates returns to GP Industria

Mitchelton-SCOTT will continue their Italian adventure on Sunday at the 41st edition of the one-day classic GP Industria and Arigianato with defending champion Adam Yates leading a solid seven rider team.

Formerly known as the Circuito di Larciano, the race was first held in 1967 and since 2005 has been part of the UCI Europe Tour and from 2017 as a 1.HC event and always boasts a strong field of competition with many riders using it as a form finder ahead of Tirreno-Adriatico. The team will be led by Yates with versatile support coming from climbers Jack Haig and Carlos Verona and young Australians Rob Power and Lucas Hamilton. The engine room will be manned by Canadian national time trial champion Svein Tuft and Sam Bewley who returns to racing after recovering from a fractured arm.

Yates recorded victories in 2014 and 2017 and it is a race that Mitchelton-SCOTT always want to perform well in, but as defending champion Yates will be a tightly marked man. The goal will be a good result without any big race pressure ahead of the following weeks Tirreno-Adriatico. A hilly race contested in the hills close to Florence in the province of Pistoia. The race covers close to 200 kilometres over eight circuits.

The circuits are challenging and the final four usually decide the race with repeated ascents of the San Baronto climb before the flat run to the finish, where in 2017 Yates outsprinted Rigoberto Uran and Simon Clarke of EF-Drapac-Cannondale to take the win.

Adam Yates – Winner 2014 and 2017: “GP Industria and Artigianato is a race I have always enjoyed and having managed to win on two occasions in 2014 and 2017, it’s obviously a race that suits me well. For the last couple of years now it has been my last hit out before some of my major objectives for the season start, so it’s nce to back this season as defending champion and hopefully we can get another good result.”

Head Sport director Matt White: “A few of the guys will be coming directly from Strade Bianche the day before and we have a good team to support Adam for Sunday’s race. After two victories and coming in as defending champion it’s obviously a race and parcours that Adam knows well, and we want to get a good result.”

“With Tirreno-Adriatico starting only three days later there won’t be too much pressure on the guys, but it is a hard race and will serve well as a fine-tuning event ahead of our next targets.”
