10 March 2018
On Saturday, March 10, the Roy Thame Cup was held at Buckingham and was quite an eventful race from what riders have said. After his win at Severn Bridge, there was another win for Rupert Graham Spirit Tifosi, who is in stellar early season form. Here is a photo report from team KTM’s Paul Lamb and Carolyn Nelson
A cold start at the Royal Latin School, Buckingham. It was great to see the Holdsworth orange back in the peloton.
Local flooding meant a last minute course alteration for the Hemel Hempstead Cycling Club organising team. Chief Comm Nick knew exactly what was in store for riders having raced in the mornings supporting Spring Chicken Road Race.
The first three miles saw multiple punctures and calls for service before the race settled down and an break of thirteen formed.
Spirit Tifosi, Holdsworth and Team KTM were well represented in the leading group with Richards Trek, Nuun Sigma and Madison Genesis also showing their colours.
With two laps to go of the twelve mile circuit, Rupert Graham took off from the break, quickly establishing a lead of over a minute.
Behind the main break, attack and counter attack kept the pace high, and despite repeated attempts, the chasing groups were unable to bridge the gap.
Penultimate lap, the leading group take on Signal Hill.
Graham’s lead had extended to over two minutes by the bell, and he was able to enjoy a comfortable ride home, taking his second win in seven days.
Douglas Coleman had the jump on the chasers to take a Spirit Tifosi 1-2. Ferguson.
A late charge from Holdsworth Russ Downing saw him finish third just catching another break escapee KTM’s Callum
A fast and furious sprint from the main group to finish saw Team KTM’s Joe Hill, a first year under-23 just pipped to the line by Holdsworth’s Tom Mazzone.
