News: Eddie Dunbar in Amstel Gold

trainSharp coached Eddie Dunbar shines on his Amstel Gold debut

After a couple of solid early season races under his belt, trainSharp coached Eddie Dunbar (Aqua Blue Sport), had an impressive performance at the Amstel Gold Race. In his first year as a World Tour pro, Eddie made it into the break of the day which was only caught in the closing stages of the race. Although we had been building towards this race, it was Eddie’s longest race to-date and his first World Tour ‘classic’ race which makes his achievements more impressive!

Eddie, who found the race a “positive and brilliant” experience, decided to take the race head-on and made his initial break from the go. To establish the break, Eddie’s initial attack generated a peak power of 825 W and an average power of 556 W. Eddie wanted to “ensure that the break wouldn’t be brought back” and so he “pressed on” with a sustained 6-minute effort to establish the gap. During this effort, Eddie averaged 370 W or 6.5 W/kg.

Throughout the whole race, Eddie’s average power was 247 W or 4.3 W/kg and his normalised power over the same period was 274 W.  By the time Eddie had reached the final 50 km, the lead had been reduced to less than four minutes. However, he still managed one final effort which left some of the other riders in the breakaway struggling to keep up with him!! The breakaway was finally caught as they approached Cauberg for the third time with about 17 km to go.

Although Eddie was caught on the climb and slipped back from the group, he still managed to hang on to finish with the bunch, just 3:26 behind the race winner, Michael Valgren (Astana Pro Team).

Well done Eddie!
