Tour of Yorkshire: Triumph for Tanfield

Press Rease

Home hero Harry Tanfield sealed a surprise victory as the opening stage of the Tour de Yorkshire reached a rip-roaring conclusion in Doncaster.

The 23 year old from Great Ayton worked his way into the day’s main breakaway and then played a pivotal role as the escapees evaded the peloton on the 182km trek from Beverley. With 300 metres to go Tanfield turned on the afterburners and edged past Alistair Slater (JLT Condor) to become the first-ever Yorkshireman to win a stage of the race.

Huge crowds turned out in Beverley to see the start of the fourth edition and clement conditions meant the county was at its magnificent best as the riders wound their way through the Yorkshire Wolds and then headed south towards Doncaster for that dramatic finish along Bennetthorpe.

Banners, bunting and a whole host of ingenious land art provided a brilliant backdrop as the riders sped across the largely flat parcours, and the 450,000 roadside spectators set a record figure for the first stage of the race.

The breakaway group containing Tanfield formed early in the stage and Michael Cuming (Madison Genesis) was the first rider over the Côte de Baggaby Hill to earn himself a spell in the best climber’s jersey sponsored by Virgin Trains. Tanfield then passed Cuming on the descent which followed to take maximum points in the first intermediate sprint in Pocklington, while Slater took the next of those points in Howden.

With those in the bag the breakaway reformed and a live Twitter vote saw Tanfield awarded the most active jersey sponsored by Dimension Data before the escapees survived to battle it out for the victory.

Tanfield emerged triumphant and the bonus seconds awarded for that win meant he opened up a three-second advantage over Slater in the General Classification. The Canyon Eisberg rider will now wear the blue leader’s jersey sponsored by Yorkshire Bank Bike Libraries for the second stage. He also tops the Best Sprinter Classification sponsored by Asda.

Earlier in the day, Wiggle High5 rider Kirsten Wild won the first stage of the Asda Tour de Yorkshire Women’s Race. That too, came down to a bunch sprint and Wild proved the fastest finisher, outpacing Amalie Dideriksen (Boels-Dolmans) and Alice Barnes (Canyon Sram Racing) to take control of the blue jersey. It was the second time in succession Wild had triumphed on Bennetthorpe following her Asda Tour de Yorkshire Women’s Race success in 2016.

Reactions

Harry Tanfield (Canyon Eisberg): “I could not believe it looking around and not seeing a bunch there. I said to myself I am going to hit these guys from the back and I knew it was a long way from the corner and they were sprinting, sprinting and not getting anywhere. I was on Ali (Slater’s) wheel, it’s a headwind, everyone is gassed and out of the saddle, I thought I’m not doing that, I’m going to get nice and aero and ride 800 watts seated and it was job done.”

“This is the best result in my career by miles. I have won nearly every jersey, it’s outrageous – I’m going to have them all on the wall.” Harry admits he didn’t expect to win the stage until the last one and half k when he was screaming at the guys that “we have this, we can do it and shouting to them to commit.”

“Everyone was doing 30 second turns at 500 watts, so we were going hard, doing 55kph. It was a hard day too, cross headwind and that was grim. It was just a mega feeling though to be on the podium so many times. I can’t describe it. It’s a shame I won all these jerseys on the same day as I can only wear one.”

“I told my girlfriend today I was going to get in the break. For the first 10k, I was at the front all the time. There were loads of attacks before I got in a break which was brought back and then I just gunned it again, 65kph an hour in the gutter, and a few riders joined me and I was like I’m not going to let a 50 kilo Spanish rider bring me back!”

I then thought it was time for some banter and said to Harry, his Brother Charlie has won worlds and Commy Games so with his stage win at Yorkshire, who’s now the best Tanfield! “He’s finished now” replied Charlie enjoying the moment …. “the track season is done, he can go at it for four minutes but I can do it for four hours! I’m going to take his room for my jerseys!”

Tim Elverson (Canyon Eisberg team boss): That is nearly as good as it can get. I said to the guys we have to have a special Tour of Yorkshire this year. We had a special one last year so it needed to be special to replicate that and to do that we have a really good squad. We haven’t fired in the UK this year as well as I hoped this year not helped by some bad luck. We have been going well in Europe though and I have some guys with big hearts in the team.”

“I knew it was just a moment from turning real good but It didn’t expect this and had goose bumps in the car, screaming in his ear. With 10k to go I said to him just try and keep that break moving and we’ll make a decision on what to do next soon – we were go to hit out solo and at 5k to go, I said to him I think this sticking , do your turns but try and hold a little back. And he finessed a little but I knew he was going well after seeing him in the second sprint and I just knew he had to time it right in the final sprint”.

On what this means to a team who had to fight so hard to get the sponsorship to be on the start this year, I put it to him this must help his cause? Tim replied “I’d like to think it does but then I don’t think we did that bad last year and I struggled to find sponsors.
So if there is anyone out there who wants to get their name out there nationally, or even world as we saw today, then we are looking for sponsors for next year and I am determined to have it nailed down by July so I can work with my guys. I think some of them should go world tour because they are good enough but equally, we have a good team and it’s a real pleasure when you put a lot of work in with little budget to work with; its a real pleasure to get a result like this.”

Mike Cuming (Madison Genesis) KoM jersey – “It’s superb, just what we wanted” explained Mike. “This takes the pressure off a bit and I am glad to pay the team back a bit with this ride. To get a jersey and a top 3 on a stage, it’s great.”

“The break was really hard. The first 16k were like tailwind and the break got away and then it was head crosswind all day and there were some bits like long dual carriageways and it felt so dead but I never thought we would stay away until 3k to go.”

“I saw the bunch at 500 to go and we were all shouting at each other and I was like I don’t want to be the first one to go and glad we didn’t get caught.”

On the KoM win, Mike explained “I just got Baylis on the line, it was pretty close but I knew there was only one of them on the day and a jersey was on the line. It felt really good to stand on that podium! I haven’t stood on one for a long time so it felt nice. It doesn’t get much better than that!”
