Report/Result: Isle of Man Youth League

Round five of Team RL360 Isle of Man’s Youth League was staged at the NSC last Tuesday night and, for the first time this season, conditions were perfect for the 311 competitors took part in the eleven race programme.

In the born 2013 & later age group Bella Quaye powered away from the field to notch up her third successive victory. Eli Dawson led Jackson Roberts, Euan Kinnish and India Smith over the line to claim the runners-up spot, with impressive newcomer Bobby Quaye edging out Riley Faragher, Harvey Wagstaffe and Daisy Teare for sixth place. Harry Kinrade outran Austin Baglow for tenth and Ewan McCubbin led the main chasing group home for 12th.

Lauren Hoch beat Elliott Barron in the tussle for the top slot in the novices class. Claudia Hoch held off Holly Beattie and Charlotte Ashall in the dash for third, while Alfie Jacobs outsprinted Alexander Jones, Ted Thompson and Naomi Nesbitt for sixth. Xara Quinn got the better of Jenson Baglow, Heidi Kelly and Elliott Sayle to secure the final place on the top ten leader board.

Recording his first win of the series, Tommy Bass kept round three winner Cameron Eyres at bay to bag maximum points in the born 2012 category. Third placed Poppy Clayton pipped Gracie Evans for the girls’ prize and Timothy Clarke came home alone to take fifth. George Hampton won the gallop for sixth, with Oliver Kennington, Archie Kaighin and Henry Kinrade just behind in seventh to ninth respectively. Seamus Hall was a safe tenth and Kieran Binns ousted Charley Staley, Charlie Christian and Millie Ward in the fight for 11th.

Finbar McSevney overcame breakaway partners Alex McCullagh and Jacob Wilson in the final surge for the chequered flag to claim the win in the born 2011 category. Bernat Munoz-Fite was just behind in fourth spot and leading girl Erin Morgan was too fast for Charlie Dormer, Macaulay Teare and Abigail Cowell in the scrap for fifth. Bobby Kewley was a lonely ninth and Samuel Kinnish headed Bobby Kerruish, Dylan Honeyman and Nathan Nevaril over the line for tenth.

In the born 2010 event Kylan Murphy slipped past Brad Le Geyt on the finishing straight for his third win of the series. Early leader Lula Kinnish was a close third and Conor Madsen-Mygdal broke free from Daniel Minay and Liam Blake to secure fourth. Harrison Skillan edged Max Messenger for seventh and Alfie Kinrade came out on top in the seven-rider sprint for ninth. Hugh Osborn rounded off the top ten.

Peel’s May-Saa Smith emerged from a group of six frontrunners to take the victory in the born 2009 race. Abi Clayton was second and Tom Pickavance third, with Zach Jones, Cameron Hounsell and Eddie Dillon not far behind in fourth, fifth and sixth places respectively. Harry Beattie led a second wave of riders in to pick up seventh spot.

A fast last lap split the field in the born 2008 class, leaving just four riders at the head of affairs. At the finish Joel Long came from behind to snatch the win from Deaglan Blake, Alec Sorby and Freddie Griffin. T.J.Teare, George Kinnish and Lewis Quirk lost contact with the leading quartet in closing stages, trailing in separately in fifth, sixth and seventh places. Edward Field and Nathan Hubbard were eighth and ninth, a short distance ahead of top girl Tiana Kelly in tenth position.

In the born 2007 & earlier grouping Oscar Gaylor rode away from breakaway companions Jordan Carter, James Kinrade and Nicola Quaye for a clear win. Carter was second, Kinrade third and Quaye the best girl in fourth position. Charlie Scarffe outpaced Teddy Dunn for fifth and Jess Pickavance dropped relative newcomer Macy Hillier on the finishing straight to grab seventh.

A large group of 14 riders contested the finish of the under-8 and under-10 racing bikes, with Alec Sorby just getting the verdict from Myles Le Geyt in a very close sprint. Deaglan Blake was third and May-Saa Smith the first girl in seventh place. Kylan Murphy took the under-8 honours in 10th spot.

Ivan Sorby, Alec’s brother, won the under-12 racing bikes in similar fashion, beating fellow frontrunners Owen Collins, Oscar Gaylor, Nicola Quaye and Rio Kelly in the final rush for the line. James Kinrade won his battle with Charlie Scarffe for sixth and Jess Pickavance surged ahead of Florence Griffin for eighth. Jordan Carter wrapped up the top ten.

In the closing stages of the 25 lap under14 & under-16 racing bikes Will Corkill, James Harrison and Aaron Lund escaped from the main group to claim the top three positions on the podium. Matthew Cooil won the bunch gallop for fourth ahead of Tyler Hannay and Zac Walker, who was the top under-14 rider in sixth spot. Shellan Leeming took the girls’ award in 14th place.
