Rockingham Forest wheelers 2 day – winners report – Matt Bottrill
It’s been a few weeks since my last race report. Probably 6 weeks. But everything has been really manic with the MBPC training camp and the day to day running of Matt Bottrill Performance Coaching.
I’ve been struggling a lot on my time trial bike since being knocked off my bike in October, I’m trying to get to the bottom of everything but at the minute it’s very clear I’m losing around 50 watts at my threshold power when I rotate my pelvis.
Hopefully over the coming months I will get to the bottom of the problem but it looks for the time being I’m not going to be able to ride many open time trials but I will just have to keep taking it day by day.
The good news is I’m fine on the road bike. While I suffer after anything longer than 3 hours in the saddle I seem ok overall. What’s good about road racing you can always stretch the back out throughout the race.
This weekend I decided to enter Rockingham Forest Wheelers 2 day. Which consists of a 50 mile road race, 2.5 mile time trial on the road bike and 56 mile road race. Just the right distance to get me back into the groove.
Saturday started with the road race first around the quiet lanes of Middleton, Northamptonshire. Taking in the climbs of Bringhurst and Ashley. It was clear from the start I was going to be heavily marked so I tried to keep quiet for the first half of the race.
Then with around 20 miles to go a group of 4 riders including my team mate, James Bentley, got away which was ideal as it meant I had no obligation to chase so I could keep quiet. Then with around 13 miles to go I made my move solo and bridged the gap to the leaders. We soon got in our stride and pulled a decent gap of 40 seconds. I could see the guys where flagging so with 3km to go I attacked the group and soloed to victory.
I’m not going to lie, It’s been a few years since I’ve done this and also how I’ve felt recently I felt liked I’d won my first race. It was also great having my son watching his old dad cross the line.
It was also great seeing James take 2nd on the stage.
Stage 2 TT
The time trial stage was just 90 mins after so not much time to recover. But I kept the body moving with a light spin and then a quick 10 min warm up.
I opted for new Endura aero helmet and tried to keep a good aero position throughout. I was happy with the power and stopped the clock with 5:43 giving me a 10 sec advantage over second place. The pain I experienced throughout this was pretty brutal and the last 200 meters seemed to take forever but two stages out of two was a dream. Going into stage 3 I had a 37sec advantage.
Ive always had good recovery so knew day two I would feel pretty strong. Over night I went through the process of eating, resting and sleeping.
Stage 3. Waking at 6am, I felt fresh and ready for the task ahead. The event stated at 10am so plenty of time to fuel and get motivated. The stage today was 6 laps with 7 ascents of the devil staircase.
It’s a short steep climb and really wears down the body. The opening laps I just tried to keep calm and out of trouble. But you could see how everybody was suffering over the crest of the climb.
Then with 3 laps to go I decided to make my move, I noted a rider called Milo Chapman from Corley CC, he’s only 18 so I’m old enough to be his dad! But each time up the climb you could see how strong he was.
So I let him know I was going to go and we soon got into our stride with another rider, Gareth Harvey. Working together we opened up a great gap of 1 minute over chasing bunch. Then with around 3 miles to go Gareth dropped back and it was up to myself and Milo to go for the win. With the road getting steeper my legs just gave out but I took second on the stage and 1st overall.
I’m not going to lie I’m still smiling ear to ear. Great getting back to road racing after a long time out. After 2nd place in the Soens at the start of the year I’m really keen to do a few more.
Next up I’m doing the Outlaw 70.3 Tri Relay with Chris Hines & Mark Threlfall
