Insight: Dunbar just misses podium finish in Belgium

2018 is turning out to be a great year for trainSharp coached, Eddie Dunbar. At the end of May, Eddie was racing for Aqua Blue Sport in the 2018 Baloise Belgium Tour where he finished 4th in the general classification.

Although the final 166 km stage from Landen to Tongeren was won by Bryan Coquard (Vital Concept), Aqua Blue Sport worked hard in the wet conditions to keep Eddie in a good position Dunbar in position for the final part of the race. On the day, Eddie finished with the lead group in 19th position which was good enough to push him into 4th place overall.

Stage 4 was a key stage for Eddie where he knew really had to perform. Eddie said that “this was always going to be the hardest day especially as the Lotto team had numbers and were going to use them well”. The demands of this stage are visible in Eddie’s power trace where he produced 264 W, 4.6 W/kg for the whole 3.5 hours.

This tough queen stage saw Eddie go on the offensive in the initial break where he hit his peak 5-min power of 396 W, 7.0 W/kg. The stage also included 12 categorised climbs which would have really taken a toll on the riders. Despite riding for over 3 hours, Eddie was still able to attack and produce 270 W, 4.7 W/kg in the last 18 km which was instrumental in creating the split that left the top five riders in the race.

As Eddie said, “that attack left him pretty spent” and so when Venendert pushed on for the last time, he just didn’t have the kick to go with him. Eddie felt that “all things considered, it was a good 5 days racing. The flat days were raced hard but I think it was a good way to get some speed into the legs”.

Eddie’s training is progressing well. After solid performances in Belgium and the Tour de Yorkshire, we now look forward to coaching Eddie as he begins the next block of his training and racing in the Tour de Suisse.
