The tropical weather that the Island enjoyed during the two weeks of TT motorcycling racing lasted just long enough for last Tuesday night’s eighth round of Team RL360 Isle of Man’s Youth League to be staged in near perfect conditions. The only slight obstacle for the 294 riders who competed in the event was a strong headwind on some sections of the course.
In the born 2013 & later age group Euan Kinnish outsprinted Eli Dawson, Jackson Roberts and leading girl Bella Quaye to record his third win of the series. Harry Kinrade and Daisy Teare were a solid fifth and sixth, with David Leece leading a five-strong chasing group home for seventh. Austin Baglow, James Fisher and Ewan McCubbin completed the top ten.
Holly Beattie went from the gun in the novices class and soloed to a decisive victory. Claudia Hoch edged out Michael McGuinness and Jenson Baglow in the race for second, while Xara Quinn headed Finlo Hoskisson and Steven Kennaugh in the dash for fifth. The fast finishing Alice Bradley snatched eighth from Toby Smith and Kilian Reynolds, with Oliver Halligan holding off Charlie Pye, Heidi Kelly and Arthur Ward in the tussle for 11th.
Sulby’s Cameron Eyres got the better of breakaway partner Tommy Bass to bag maximum points for the second time in the born 2012 event. George Hampton was a safe third and top girl Poppy Clayton stayed well clear of a chasing group of eleven riders to claim fourth. Charlie Christian, Timothy Clarke, Aedan Le Roux, Corrie Brogan, Kieran Binns and Seamus Hall rounded off the top ten leader board.
Returning to his winning ways after a rare defeat in the previous round, Finbar McSevney was too quick for Jacob Wilson and Alex McCullagh in the final rush for the top slot in the born 2011 category. Leading girl Abigail Cowell got away from Bernat Munoz-Fite to take fourth and Toby Costain came from behind to pip Charlie Dormer for sixth. Dylan Honeyman got the verdict over Bobby Kerruish, Macaulay Teare and George Watterson in the gallop for eighth.
Three riders got away at the start of the born 2010 race and stayed clear to the finish where series leader Kylan Murphy eased ahead of the rest to record his sixth success. Brad Le Geyt held off Liam Blake in the battle for the runners-up spot and Conor Madsen-Mygdal was too strong for first girl Lula Kinnish in the scrap for fourth. Daniel Minay maintained station in sixth place and Hugh Osborn led Thomas Hutchinson, Max Messenger and Casey Clague in for seventh.
In the born 2009 three lapper May-Saa Smith emerged from a group of six frontrunners to grab the win. Abi Clayton was second closely followed by Zach Jones, Eddie Dillon, Tom Pickavance and Cameron Hounsell in third to sixth places respectively. Harry Beattie came home alone for seventh and Graihagh Morgan kept Henry Dormer at bay for eighth. Matthew Hooper wrapped up the top ten.
Freddie Griffin forged ahead of travelling companions Deaglan Blake, Charlie Williams and T.J.Teare to fill the top step on the podium in the born 2008 class. George Kinnish ousted Nathan Hubbard and Lewis Quirk for fifth, with Leon Murphy beating Bob Radcliffe to the line for eighth. Tiana Kelly was the first girl in tenth spot.
After gapping the field on the opening lap of the born 2007 & earlier grouping, Cian Howard overcame breakaway escapeess Oscar Gaylor, Orry Lund and Jordan Carter in the lunge for the chequered flag. Nicola Quaye lost contact with the four leaders on the final lap, taking the girls’ prize in fifth place. Jess Pickavance was sixth and Sam Cunningham got past Sophie Smith in the closing stages to nab seventh.
With series leader and five times winner Alec Sorby missing from the start sheet, the door was wide open for someone else to taste success in the combined under-8 and under-10 racing bikes. In the end it was Myles Le Geyt who grabbed the opportunity, outsprinting fellow frontrunners Charlie Williams, Freddie Griffin, Kylan Murphy, T.J.Teare, Eddie Dillon and Deaglan Blake for the top spot. May-Saa Smith was the best girl in eighth position.
Eight riders circulated together at the head of the under-12 racing bikes and stayed as one to the finish where Oscar Gaylor came out on top in the dart for the chequered flag. Cian Howard and Owen Collins were second and third, with Sophie Smith pipping Nicola Quaye for the girls’ prize in sixth place.
In the under-14 & under-16 racing bikes an eleven-strong front group was eventually whittled down to a select band of eight. After making several unsuccessful attacks, Will Corkill had enough left in his legs to take the win in a close sprint with James Harrison, Matthew Cooil, Aaron Lund, Tyler Hannay, Jack Christian and Ralf Holden (top U/14), who all crossed the line in that order. Matthew Black and Zac Walker completed the top ten, while Shellan Leeming was the first girl in 16th spot.
