Hannah Barnes claimed her first national time trial title as she and sister Alice took gold and silver for Canyon-SRAM at the British Time Trial Championships.

In challenging, hot conditions in Northumberland, Barnes – who was the final rider on the course – recorded a time of 39:38:145 to beat her younger sister by 17 seconds. Storey Racing’s Neah Evans completed the podium positions after clocking 41:15:361 over the 28.6km course.

Barnes, who took silver behind Claire Rose last year, said after the race: “I’m happy. This is a target I had for the season so it’s nice to have this jersey, and to have Alice in second is pretty cool. There’s not much rivalry between us – we’ve both focused a lot on our time trials this season, so coming into this we had a lot of help from our team. We certainly couldn’t blame our equipment or the team if it didn’t go well today, so it was down to us to perform on the day.”

Men’s Title
Geraint Thomas put in a stunning performance to win the men’s time trial title at the British Time Trial Championships in the punishing Northumberland heat this evening.

The Team Sky rider clocked a time of 48:54.78 to see off strong competition from Harry Tanfield (Canyon Eisberg) who claimed silver in a time of 49:31:94, and five-time champion Alex Dowsett (Katusha-Alpecin) who finished third after crossing the line in 49:48:80.

Long-time leader John Archibald was just edged out of the medals and ended up in fourth. Afterwards, Thomas said: “It was great. Obviously winning the Dauphine was a big boost, and I’ve done a big bit of training since so to come here and win the Nationals for the first time is really encouraging. I rarely get to race in the UK or do a one-off time trial either, so I’m really happy.”

Charlie Tanfield (Canyon Eisberg) won the Men’s Under 23 title from Charlie Quarterman and Tom Pidcock
