News: Juniors for GB at Track Worlds
A 14-strong team of junior riders who will represent Great Britain at the UCI Junior Track Cycling World Championships, taking place in Aigle, Switzerland, from 15th – 19th August.
Pfeiffer Georgi, who was the overall winner of the Trofeo de Moreno – Piccolo Trofeo Alfredo Binda and the Healthy Ageing Tour Nations’ Cups, will be joined by Ella Barnwell, Anna Docherty and Ellie Russell who have supported Pfeiffer on the road and have helped put Great Britain into second place in the Nation rankings. The reigning under-16 national individual pursuit and Madison champion Elynor Backstedt completes the line-up, having missed out on the road season due to illness.
In the men’s endurance events, Charley Calvert along with Will Tidbull and Ethan Vernon, winners of the bronze medal in the elite British Madison Championships in December, will represent Great Britain in their second junior world championships. Zach Bridges and Max Rushby are set to make their debut in Aigle, both having shown improvements in terms of strength and consistency in training.
GB’s junior academy sprinters James Bunting, Dan Cooper and Ali Fielding will contest the sprint events in the junior men’s category while guest rider Luisa Steele will represent Great Britain in the junior women’s category. All four riders have shown progress throughout the course of the year and will be looking to translate this into their racing.
Performance pathway manager Tom Stanton said: “The results we’ve seen from the junior endurance riders on the road this year, from domestic level right through to the prestigious UCI Junior Nations’ Cup series, have been excellent and I’ll be interested to see how this converts to their performance on the track at world-level.
“Equally, while there are less racing opportunities for sprinters, the numbers the riders are producing in training are continually improving and I think we can expect some good results from the four sprinters.
“The development of talented young riders is a crucial component of the Great Britain Cycling Team’s remit and, while it’s always great for us to see British riders on the podium, I’ll also be looking for the riders to make the most of their opportunity of being selected to race against world-class competition, and to come away with learnings they can put to use in future competitions.”
