On a cold cold, windy and wet day in the Howardian Hills of the Ryedale District of North Yorkshire, Anna Henderson and Graham Briggs triumphed in the Women’s and Men’s races.

In the Women’s race, it was a war of attrition as the Women’s peloton got smaller and smaller each lap and then over the closing laps, crashes and attacks saw the peloton split to bits and Anna Christian and Anna Henderson escaped. Despite being two very strong riders, their lead never looked big enough but hold on they did and despite cramp, Henderson outsprinted Christian to win the final Nataional Women’s Series race of 2018.

In the Men’s race, it was even better – one of the best races of the year – said organiser Bob Howden afterwards. A breakway of 11 riders escaped early on with Fraser Martin (Saint Piran), Richard Handley, George Pym and Jonny McEvoy (all Madison Genesis), Graham Briggs, Joey Walker, Tom Pidcock, Elliot Harison, Jacob Scott, Edmund Bradbury and Max Stedman (Canyon Eisberg).

They quickly had a lead of five minutes over the peloton and it looked like in the dreadful conditions the riders not in the break were not interested in a day in the rain. How wrong that was.

Chasers came and went but the real damage was when Canyon Eisbery put all their men on the front of bring the break back to within touching distance and 30 seconds was the best they managed. Out front as the race entered the final laps, the break started to split as the attacking began, riders were dropped and new riders joined it like Tom Moses went across with Erick Rowsell of Madison Genesis and then British champion Connor Swift also of Madison Genesis solo’d across the gap.

At the bell, Max Stedman was piling on the pressure in the break which was spread out over the climb through the Abbey grounds whilst the peloton had given up bringing the break back and was now over two minutes back. A break of five formed during that fateful last lap and coming into the finish climb, Jonny McEvoy led it out for Connor Swift before Graham Briggs used every ounce of energy left to get his front wheel over the line first ahead of Stedman who pipped a dying Swift with Tom Moses trapped on the barriers in fourth.
