Insight: James Shaw’s ToB Numbers
On stage 6 of the Tour of Britain on one of the races toughest parcours, James Shaw of Lotto Soudal found himself getting in a move with two former World time trial champions. He says of that day “If I am ever in a break with Tony Martin and Vasil Kiryienka again, I am dropping straight back to the peloton LoL!”
James Shaw in London on stage 8
trainSharp coached James Shaw gave us his view on stage 6 of the Tour of Britain, adding: “When you see Martin, Swift and Kiryienka going up the road, it’s more than likely better to be in than not. To me, I didn’t want to miss this. At one point during the day, I had hoped that we’d stay away. With the pulling power of two ex-world time trial champs, you can see why I was hopeful. The whole break away worked well together all day but the day was 3km too far.”
trainSharp coached James Shaw had an outstanding ride, being the virtual leader of the race for some time during the stage. During stage 6 of the Tour of Britain. He rode in the breakaway all day, showing his class and working with former world TT champions Tony Martin and Vasil Kiryienka, along with the current British national road champion, Connor Swift.
James first attacked at the start of the race to try and establish a breakaway, but team Sky were pushing on in the early minutes, so this first effort did not stick. In this effort, James produced nearly 900W.

He then attacked again some minutes later, producing just over 900W, this was the break that stuck for the day. The break was caught with around 3km to go, where James put in a final surge to be the last man on the road caught by the peloton.
James averaged 295W for 3 hours and 38 minutes during the break, which is 4.72 W/kg. This is outstanding when you consider that this power was produced for nearly four hours! On such a tough day and with riders with such a strong palmarés, James did incredibly well. Congrats on a great ride.
