Book: I Like Alf

A great read about an icon in the sport of cycling, Alf Engers who was not just a great ‘tester’ but one of the sports biggest ever characters

With British riders winning all three Grand Tours in 2018 (still find that unbelievable), the country is not short of heros in the sport of road cycling but back in the 70s, I remember reading a lot about this man, Alf Engers in the magazines of the day.

Few champions of that era had the impact on the sport that Alf did and it was a great honour to meet him and his Australian wife this year after so many decades since I was reading about his deeds. Now, I can read about them again and more in this new book by Paul Jones.

“I Like Alf” is the story of Alf Engers and his pursuit of speed on two wheels, set against a backdrop of cycling clubs, shop-owners, framebuilders, riders, racers, team managers and officials.

It loops from the Paddington Track to the Skol Six, Herne Hill to the National Road Race Championships and from Boroughbridge to Barnet, in and out of time and place to capture the truth of a racing career of unequalled achievement, charisma and controversy.

Constructed from extensive interviews with Alf Engers, “I Like Alf” is the definitive tale of a mythical and charismatic folk hero of British cycling.

A whole new meaning to the cycling term ‘drilling it’ – Alfs bikes were a work of art.
