World champion Van der Breggen on her way to ’t Kuipke

Het Nieuwsblad is a race which attracts the world’s strongest riders year-on-year. Amongst the women heading to the 14th edition of the Flanders Classics opener is world champion Anna van der Breggen (Boels Dolmans Cycling Team). Going up against the rainbow jersey, last year’s winner Christina Siggaard returns with Team Virtu Cycling in pursuit of back-to-back wins on 2 March.

With Anna van der Breggen, the start of Omloop Het Nieuwsblad will feature a rainbow jersey. Back in 2015 she was already the strongest in the opening classic, and could become a joint record holder if she achieves victory anew. Her Boels Dolmans Cycling Team is looking to start their classics season with a bang, having the world champion joined by current Dutch champion Chantal Blaak.

The opposition comes in part from the Sunweb team. The Dutch team heads to Ghent with 2017 winner, Lucinda Brand, starting the classics off the back of a strong cyclocross season. In addition to Brand, Team Sunweb will also be playing the card of American Coryn Rivera, winner of 2017 the Tour of Flanders and therefore someone who knows a thing or two about tackling the Flemish Ardennes.

The Trek-Segafredo team makes its debut, with a wealth of experience through two former Tour of Flanders victors, Elisa Longo Borghini and Ellen van Dijk. If the race comes down to a sprint, all eyes will be on fast finisher Lotta Lepistö, who in 2017 took the top spot on the podium at both Dwars door Vlaanderen and Gent-Wevelgem In Flanders Fields.

Last year’s winner, Christina Siggaard, will receive the support of European champion Marta Bastianelli in Team Virtu Cycling. The Italian won both Gent-Wevelgem In Flanders Fields and De Brabantse Pijl in 2018. It’s also worth keeping an eye on Ashleigh Moolman-Pasio. The South African champion, of the new CCC-Liv team.

Alexis Ryan from the Canyon//SRAM team was forced to see Christina Siggaard lead in 2018, so we are curious to see if she can try for a win again this year and finish in a higher position. She can in any case rely on the experience of her team-mate Tiffany Cromwell, who won Omloop Het Nieuwsblad in 2013.

In total, 24 teams, of which 19 hold UCI status, will line up on 2 March in Gent. They will be joined by three Belgian club teams, a Dutch development team and the UCI World Cycling Center team, adding further international reach. And so the countdown begins. On March 2 we will see whether world champion Anna van der Breggen will be able to make the gesture of victory in Ninove and shine in her rainbow jersey in the top opening classic.

The final team selections may be subject to change in weeks leading up to the race, and Flanders Classics will be sure to communicate every important change.
